How much is Rudy Gay worth?

Grizzlies failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Rudy Gay before the NBA deadline. So He'll be a RFA this summer coming off his rookie contract. I think Memphis want OJ to be their guy, and build around OJ Mayo. So How much is Rudy Gay worth? Any chance we get him next season? Rondo to Rudy for a slam dunk, how does that sound?

So far Rudy has underachieved in Memphis. It could be the system or his own immaturity. But dude is very talented. If he comes here, and sees KG's, Ray's, and Pierce's work ethic Rudy can be molded into a superstar. At little discipline would go so far for Rudy.

Yeah ... I agree he's very talented, and could work effectively on this team ... just not sure we could swing it money-wise. Interesting prospect, though ... TP.

I think he's worth about 10 million a year, so I see no conceivable way that the C's could get it done.

It depends on what kind of market there will be for him (lets hope he has a bad season) and if that market is low (MLE money), then I would assume the Griz would match. Although, they ARE the Grizzlies so who knows.

I guess the short of it is that its too early to really tell how much money a player like Gay could command with so many big free agents on the market and with the relative uncertainty of the cap number for next season.

he has a very intriguing talent, and this leads me to believe that a team with cap space will give a big offer if they miss out on the marquee free agents. I think in terms of talent there aren't many players as good as him.

I think a team that is enamoured with his talent will give him around 12 mill per year.

I think the more apt question is what does Memphis think he is worth.  I would think they are going to try and trade him.  At this point, two of the 3 other options are not very good for them.  They could lose him for nothing or end up matching and over paying.  I guess a sign and trade is possible too but somehow doesn't seem like Memphis is the kind of team to take back a bunch salary.

How about offering the athlete formally known as Baby.  Memphis already has one injured back up PF, why not add another.

If circumstances were a little different, if they didn't already have Marc Gasol and if Danny wanted for some reason to make a dramatic roster shake-up, you could think about a Perk-for-Gay deal.  If for whatever reason the C's end up disappointing by midseason, you could think about a deal like that.  We'd have Gay's Bird rights and could re-sign him to replace Ray Allen at the end of the season.  We'd likely at the same time trade Ray for another big man.  'Sheed could start, but we'd need another good big. 

I would absolutly NOT do that trade, but if you want Gay, that's how you could possibly get it done.  We aren't going to have the ability to sign him next offseason outside of some kind of S&T with Ray Allen, but I can't see why they'd want Ray.  Of course, I don't know why they wanted AI either, so you never know...

I think there are going to be a number of teams next year that swing and miss on the big free agents, then feel like they have to do something with their cap space. We call it the matt clemente special. So say New York does not get lebron or any of the players, you better believe they would charge hard at players like Gay so stop, or slow down, a fan riot. Thats why I am so happy we avoided Rondo being an RFA.

if hes willing to settle for the MLE because thats all he can get a whole bunch of other teams will step up and offer it, other teams that will have a lot more PT available for him to take, and also a starting job (i know you suggested he'd take Rays spot but unless this season turns into a disaster I dont see Ray moving to bench as soon as next season).

I also think if we're gnna trade BBD we might be able to land something more useful than a half season rental of Rudy Gay, just my .02.
