The pats cutting 4 players in the last 24 hours is setting off speculation that a deal is in the works:

Quote
The release of Tully Banta-Cain, Joey Galloway, Eric Alexander, and Michael Matthews opens up $2.87 million in nonprorated 2009 salary cap space, which in theory allows the Patriots to absorb a player with a full-season base salary of $2.85 million.  (Because all players were signed through 2009 only, there's no cap acceleration arising from cutting them.)

Some are speculating that the Patriots are making a play for Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman.

Coincidentally, his full-season base salary for 2009 is $2.972 million.

Another possibility could be Rams running back Steven Jackson (WEEI radio apparently is throwing that one around), but Jackson's full-season base salary if $5.5 million.  Also, the Rams reportedly aren't inclined to move him.

Many also are speculating that linebacker Adalius Thomas would be included in any trade, given his surprise scratch on Sunday.  His $1.9 million full-season base salary would be offset by bonus acceleration from 2010 and 2011, the final two years of his contract.

Either way, stay tuned.

Oh, man ... Merriman would be such an incredible fit for this team ... that would be like KG was for the Celtics, (well, maybe not quite that big a deal) ... wow ... my head is spinning now!

Merriman has been awful this year...

not that I would be opposed, it would depend on the price.

Steven Jackson, huh?  I guess considering the current depth chart at RB, it wouldn't be the most surprising development.  However, Maroney did run well (albeit against the Titans) on Sunday.

I just can't picture Merriman as a Patriot.

I couldn't picture Moss as a Patriot, either ... I've made the adjustment now. ;)

Merriman is coming off an injury that takes more than a year to recover from.  He doesn't have his burst, but I wouldn't bet against that guy from recovering.

Post the failed test, he averaged a sack a game while playing predominantly at a SS LB position (which is unheard of for a guy not playing the open side).

If AJ Smith trades Merriman to the Pats, he's given up on the season.

Im pretty excited at the prospect of Merriman coming this way.  I always hated him, but its amazing what changing laundry will do.

i don't buy the Merriman rumors.  he is recovering from injury and is a FA after this year.

I could see Steve Jackson.
But I also doubt it.  Knowing BB, he is probably targeting some unheralded player....
Celtics fan for life.

the fact that he is a FA would theoretically work to our advantage.  if SD decides they are done, if they think they cant resign him, you could see them try and get somethign for him.

If BB is going all in (plus we have a ton of picks)

I mean, I doubt it, but it isnt impossible
