Patriots Release WR Greg Lewis

The Patriots released receiver Greg Lewis today.

Lewis, a seven-year veteran, was acquired from the Eagles in March. The Patriots acquired Lewis along with a seventh-round draft choice for a fifth-round draft pick.

The 29-year-old Lewis, who spent the first six years of his career with the Eagles, was thought to be in competition for the No. 3 or 4 receiver spot.

The Patriots have Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Joey Galloway, Sam Aiken and Julian Edelman at receiver.

We also claimed DB Bret Lockett (UCLA) off waivers from the Browns

Yeah, this is weird- especially since they traded a pick to get him. I have always kind of liked Lewis as a receiver and he isn't old or anything. Do you think there is another reason behind this move? It's not like we have a ton of depth at the WR spot-although we have a great top 3...

realgm said it was a clerical error.  Is that confirmed or did I read that wrong?

Surprising move -- Pats traded picks for WR Lewis and TE Smith, so looks like they made big mistakes there.  I thought that Lewis had been playing okay.  It seemed to me that Galloway was the one who was slow to pick things up.
