The topic of speed reading fascinates me.  How anyone can read thousands of words per minute and have good comprehension and retention is amazing.

Do any of you CBers consider yourself a legitimate speed reader?

If so how quick are you and how did you get to that level?

I read relatively fast to the normal person, but I'm no speed reader. That stuff is nuts. Also, I think its pretty rare. In my experience everyone I've met who claimed to be a speed reader was actually more of a "skip words in the middle" reader.

It is funny, Edgar, because it took me longer to read the pictures since it was in spanish than it did the rest of your post.

  • Yup
slow and steady does the trick for me.

my wife and I both read a lot, but she can go through five books in the time it takes me read one.

Since going back to school I've tried reading entire lines at once and concentrating on key words, but inevitable it gets blurred and I end up having to re-read it anyhow.
Yup

I'm a pretty fast reader; I average about 2 pages a minute on most books, slightly slower on academic papers.  I can knock off a medium-sized novel in an afternoon.  But I'm not a speed reader - my impression of that stuff is it's about capturing the gist of something without actually processing everything on the page.

As for how I got there, I was pretty much born that way; I didn't do anything to earn it except being a voracious reader as a kid.
