If we can avoid trading Gabe Pruitt in the Daniels deal, what about getting into the Boozer deal?

To Utah: Glenn Davis and Gabe Pruitt (to non tender)

To Chicago: Carlos Boozer

To Portland: Kirk Hinrich and Anthony Roberson

To Boston: Travis Outlaw

Utah gets a young PF and clears over $8.5MM in salary (and $17MM) in salary.

Chicago gets the PF and clears a spot exclusively for Rose.  They already have Pargo as a replacement

Portland gets the PG they desperately need.

Boston gets a backup SF and can let Marquis Daniels be the backup SG.   Also, there are reasonable options at a backup PF at the minimum (Joe Smith?)

I'd like to see if this works completely, but I love it. We get a good SF, and we can even have Marquis play PG on offense so that House doesn't have to handle the ball. It would also let us go small.

My only problem is I really don't think Utah would want to do the deal. They want to save money, but I do think they want value out of it such as Tyrus Thomas or Richard Hamilton

Won't happen, Pruitt's deal won't save them very much money if they're forced to have Glen Davis to a hefty contract. Utah needs to work out a trade with a team under the cap and a whatever team gets Boozer.

Davis can't be signed to a big enough deal to match Boozer's salary (BBD is limited to no more than the MLE in the first two years of any deal), and even if he could be, "base year compensation" rules prevent it.

I rather have Davis now that Daniels is on board.

Agreed.  And I rather not help Miami get stronger.  We have enough competition in the East. ;D

I should have mentioned Davis's $4.75MM salary.

Since Portland is involved, they are absorbing the cap space difference to make this deal work.  If they aren't involved, this doesn't work.  Since they are, it does.

From Boston's Perspective

Outlaw: $4MM translates to $3.2MM with the 25% difference in salaries

$3.2 - $.0.825 (Pruitt's salary) = $2.375 MM in a cap hit

Since BYC rules say that Boston can only take 50% back, that $2.375MM can be multiplied by 2 ($4.75MM).

Won't happen, Pruitt's deal won't save them very much money if they're forced to have Glen Davis to a hefty contract. Utah needs to work out a trade with a team under the cap and a whatever team gets Boozer.

Utah would be saving $16MM in this deal when you consider the dollar for dollar luxury tax

The deal is involving a team who is under the cap.  The only difference is the Celtics are trading Pruitt and Davis for Outlaw.  Pruitt would be non tendered.

I'm pretty sure my assumptions are correct on the salary Davis would have to make in order for a deal with Utah, Portland to be involved.  Wanted to get some feedback if possible.

The problem is, the trade doesn't work from Utah's perspective.  They are giving up $12,323,900 in salary, and are only getting $5.575 million in salary back.  That doesn't work under the cap rules, as Utah is well over the salary cap.

Utah is over the cap and if Portland weren't involved ... this deal wouldn't work.  Portland is under the cap AND they are taking on a $7MM surplus.

This appears to be no different than a team with cap space choosing to take a player from another team to make a deal work.

You could substitute CJ Miles with Davis ending up with $4.3MM with his first year contract.

Though ESPN appears to have the wrong salary for Outlaw, I played with this deal as a three team deal with Utah taking in only Outlaw and this works because of Portland being involved in the deal.
