Let's analyze what we are going for here, by first looking at what we expect to have in place for our second unit:
Sheed Great outside shooting center, not much of a rebounder. Good defender.
Baby Decent outside shooting power forward, not much of a rebounder. Decent defender
Eddie Great outside shooting point guard. Below average defender
Tony Terrible outside shooter, decend rebounder. Good defender
Seems to me that our focus should be on getting a small forward who can rebound very well, and defend very well. I think Bill Walker is a very good rebounder given the limited minutes I have seen him play. Ditto Giddens, though I question whether he has the size to defend against the back up 3's in the league. If either or both of them can master the defensive rotations this year, maybe we already have the answer for our missing back up 3. I don't think we need much offensive production from this position. We need a good rebounder who can defend well. Scal is just not quick enough to cover most 3's in the league. He is also a below average rebounder. Walker and Giddens can compete against each other all season for that role. Competition is a good thing, it will bring the best out of each of them. The better guy will likely emerge by the middle or end of the season. I think we are too fixed on getting another veteran for the second unit, when in fact we have Sheed and Eddie. Baby and Tony are no newbies.
