I think we need to remember the potential decrease in the cap figure for 2010 when we talk about moves that teams may or may not do.
If a team wants to add two max players it seems they will need between 36-40 million in cap space to sign them (not doing detailed math here, so maybe someone can get more exact numbers).
The cap is reported to decrease into the 50-53 million range, so using the midpoint of my estimations (ie two max contract equalling 38 million and the cap being 52 million) that means a team cannot have more that 14 million on their books going into that FA. and the less the better because the cap could be closer to 50 million....
If we look at Miami, they could be in the best shape of any team in terms of cap space. They essentially have nobody on their payroll for that season - assuming Wade opts out. But they do have a bunch of options on players that they might want to exercise or at the very least not let walk for nothing. Moon being a RFA is sort of in the same category.
I would bet that MIA will take up the option of Beasley, so that would add 5 mil to the payroll, but if they could add an interesting prospect (eg, Giddens or Walker) for short money and an expiring contract (eg TA or Scals), I could totally see MIA moving James Jones, or Moon in an S&T.
I would think the main goal for MIA is to maintain the most cap space possible without completely giving all their chips away.
I guess one question for them is do they want to have a poor season coming up so as to add a lottery pick at a time that they may also be able to add two max contracts.
anyway, the end result for the Cs could be that MIA is willing to move one of these long SFs for a relatively modest package.
how about Scals and Giddens for James Jones?
