I think we need to remember the potential decrease in the cap figure for 2010 when we talk about moves that teams may or may not do.

If a team wants to add two max players it seems they will need between 36-40 million in cap space to sign them (not doing detailed math here, so maybe someone can get more exact numbers).

The cap is reported to decrease into the 50-53 million range, so using the midpoint of my estimations (ie two max contract equalling 38 million and the cap being 52 million) that means a team cannot have more that 14 million on their books going into that FA. and the less the better because the cap could be closer to 50 million....

If we look at Miami, they could be in the best shape of any team in terms of cap space. They essentially have nobody on their payroll for that season - assuming Wade opts out. But they do have a bunch of options on players that they might want to exercise or at the very least not let walk for nothing. Moon being a RFA is sort of in the same category.

I would bet that MIA will take up the option of Beasley, so that would add 5 mil to the payroll, but if they could add an interesting prospect (eg, Giddens or Walker) for short money and an expiring contract (eg TA or Scals), I could totally see MIA moving James Jones, or Moon in an S&T.

I would think the main goal for MIA is to maintain the most cap space possible without completely giving all their chips away.

I guess one question for them is do they want to have a poor season coming up so as to add a lottery pick at a time that they may also be able to add two max contracts.

anyway, the end result for the Cs could be that MIA is willing to move one of these long SFs for a relatively modest package.

how about Scals and Giddens for James Jones?

trading James Jones would do two things. It would save them from having to pick up his 5 million option (which would put them in the danger zone for signing two max players) and it would open up PT for Dorrell Wright, a player that they absolutely need to find out if he can play because this is the last year they have him under contract.

James Jones averaged 4.2 points per game last season.  I don't think Miami will have any qualms about walking away from him without getting compensation in return.

Jones is gone after this season for the Heat and that's going to leave 25 million still on the books. Don't forget Wade still counts against their cap. So saying he resigns, that's still going to leave over 25 million or more in room available to them and since Bosh is their goal, they have plenty because he is going to max out at around 17 million.

Only reason to take on James Jones is if it's part of a deal for Moon.

Which misses a lot of context considering that he was injured through most of the year and had to do quite a bit of work to get himself back at a good playing level.

He was one of their better players during the playoffs.

Does anyone know if Jones' contract is fully unguaranteed?  It might be one of those partially guaranteed deals where they could wave his last 3 years for what would amount to a 3 or 4 million buyout.

If that's the case, the C's could have a decent chance of landing Jones and Moon for expiring contracts, since they could save Miami some money next year. But would Moon be a BYC player in any sign and trade?

James Jones: Signed for 5 years and $23.2 million in July 2008. Contract boosted by $10,000 a year due to a "summer development" bonus, whatever that is. Contract has a 15% trade kicker. Final three years are only partially guaranteed ($1,856,000, $1,984,000, and $2,112,000 respectively) but become fully guaranteed if Jones is not waived on or before 6/30/2010.

Yuck...a trade kicker. That means another 600-700K more and doesn't include lux tax if we are taking in more than we are giving up.

On the other hand if Tony Allen is being sent out of town to get Jones, I'm all for it.

Thanks birdman.  There's some minor incentive for Miami to sign and trade Jamario Moon with him.  The question remains, would Jamario Moon signed at 3 million per count as a BYC player?

As for their respective games, I think they are very similar players: long, limited, low-usage catch-and-shoot players who do a nice job defensively.  Moon's the more athletic defender and rebounder, while Jones is the savvier team defender.  I'd really like our wing depth after a Scal-Tony-Walker for a Jones-Moon swap, if it's possible or even plausible.

Jones was injured most of the season, but put it together towards the end.

I think he would be a nice piece and could be waived at the end of the season if it didn't work out.

I don't think Miami has any incentive in trading players that have team option years. For one, they have to be prepared for the Wade situation next FA, and they don't have anybody signed next year... they're better off keeping the option years with people they know they can contribute and improve their chances in keeping Wade. If Wade goes, then they can decide what to do with those options then.

So unless they get some real talent for them, they should not interested in moving them.

but a player like Giddens gives them a player with an option on a much more affordable contract.

they really can't pick up the option on Jones. The salary could interfere with their ability to sign two max players.

I'd be all for Scal and Tony for James Jones. Hell I'd drive them to the airport and I'd even throw in Walker if it would help.
