BTW, playing with the ESPN trade machine, I noticed that Portland has a sizeable trade exception.

The following three-way trade works, per the TM:

Portland receives Tony Allen from Boston (using TE)
Knicks receive Sergio Rodriguez from Portland and Brian Scalabrine from Boston
Boston receives Chris Duhon from Knicks

Not sure whether that's something that everyone would agree on, but thought I'd throw it out there.
Portland only does this trade if they are getting more cash than TA's contract (i.e. at least 2.5 million).
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Duhon would be a very good pickup for us. Point isn't our biggest need, but its def a need.

Blazers fans seem to think it's a salary dump so they can maybe make a run at a PG this offseason.

That's not even their biggest need. Blake's done a fine job (although he is coming off of shoulder surgery). They really need a vet 3 who can score and take the pressure off of Roy. Richard Jefferson would have been a great addition at the deadline last season, and probably wouldn't have cost them much more than Raef Lafrentz's expiring contract.

While Duhon wouldn't be a bad PG I would think we could do a little better with trading TA and Scal.
Really?

You're expectations are a lot higher than mine. I think Duhon is a great get for that trade package.

Agreed.  This is a fantastic trade for the Cs.  Like Scal and TA, Duhon has only one year on his contract.  Which then raises the question: why would Portland or NY be at all inclined to make the proposed deal?  NY loses its starting PG for Scal and gets less of a trade exception back from Portland.  Portland gets TA, who they don't need, and have less cap space than they would if they had just done the original trade.  In short, the trade doesn't make sense for any body except Boston.

Well, why does NY want Rodriguez, if they already have $6 mil invested in Duhon next season? Combine that with the buzz around Steph Curry, and it seems Duhon isn't exactly high on the Knicks' depth chart. The deal also frees up some payroll to keep Robinson or Lee.

As for Portland, Allen gives them a young veteran wing who has the ability to play both offense and defense. Webster (offense) and Batum (defense) are fairly one-dimensional and unproven (Webster has done nothing since coming into the league, due in large part to injuries).

If they decide to release Blake (non-guaranteed contract) for cap space, that will mean an even thinner depth chart at guard for the Blazers: Bayless and the aforementioned Webster as the only real backcourt options off the bench, unless they pick up a guard with their cap space.

I see how Portland might be less inclined, but that's only because I'm not a member of Tony's fan club.

I like this trade. Addresses one area of need for us, back-up pg.
