IMHO Jarvis Green is too good to cut.

As for Peppers' new deal, Carolina has veto power over the terms, does it not?

I think it depends who else is available.  I think Green makes a little too much money for a backup.

As for veto power, I am not sure what you mean.  Carolina needs to agree to the trade, but I really don't see why they would care about the contract if they are trading him.

There is no way Jarvis gets cut.  no way.

Mike Wright primarily backs up Wilfork at NT.  Jarvis plays outside.  Wright's contract has no bearing on Jarvis.

Adam Schefter (who is I think is excellent) seems to be in the same boat as me:

SCHEFTER SAYS PEPPERS-TO-PATS WON’T HAPPEN
Posted by Mike Florio on March 17, 2009, 12:08 p.m. EDT
In his weekly appearance on WEEI in Boston, Adam Schefter of NFL Network said that the Panthers won’t be trading defensive end Julius Peppers to the Patriots.

“That trade is not gonna happen,” Schefter told Dennis & Callahan of WEEI.

Schefter cited the financial investment that Peppers would require and the looming class of Patriots free agents (including Vince Wilfork and Richard Seymour), who will be on the market in 2010.

Schefter’s opinion conflicts sharply with a Monday report from Vic Carucci of NFL.com, who seemed to suggest that a trade would happen at some point between the upcoming league meetings (which open on March 22) and the 2009 draft.

“I’m telling you, they’re not gonna do it,” Schefter said later in the segment.  “. . . .  I don’t believe for a second there’s any truth to it.”

Schefter then said he’s 99.9 percent sure that Peppers won’t be playing for the Patriots next year.

But Schefter then acknowledged that that 0.1 percent could come to fruition, and that he could be exposed as a “complete fraud.”

Meanwhile, Schefter said that he regards the chances of the Pats signing defensive end Jason Taylor as “realistic.”

While I like Green I don't think I agree that he can't or wouldn't be cut if they sign Peppers. The Pats tend to play weird formations anyway, one or two linemen, etc and Peppers could always play D end as well as linebacker. I could very well see Jarvis being a casulty of this signing.

I think if they got Peppers, which is seeming more like a long shot (Shefter is almost always right), I dont see it affecting Jarvis.  While the pat's do play crazy schemes, Jarvis is their top backup at the position (and Seymour hasnt been a rock of durability).  Peppers doesnt want to play dline anymore, hence his demands for a trade where he can play lb.  I dont think he would be happy with coming in and then playing a lot of snaps there.  sure, I could see it a few snaps a game, but not as a primary backup.

Additionally, Jarvis's cap hit this year is: $5,406,720 (which is actually a bit high, but thats because he hit a bunch of incentives).  The problem is, if they cut him, they would still have a cap hit of: $2,900,000.  So you are looking at a cap savings of around 2.5 million.  Jarvis is worth more then that amount in cap savings.  To put that in perspective, they could cut Kevin Faulk (I am not suggesting they do that) and save 3.5 million in cap savings.

I heard Adam's whole take on this on Weei this morning. Another point he had is Carolina can't do a thing till he agree on that one year offer simliar to how Cassell first had to come to an agreement with the Pats before he could be traded. Although I wouldn't agree with the 99.9% chance of not happening. I'd put it more of 75% chance it doesn't happen. I think Belichk doesn't plan on resigning Seymour if he gets Peppers.

I would rather sign less expensive players and draft high.  Peppers is really good but it seems like we rely on our backups a lot, so I say get a bunch of quality back ups, like go get Lucas.  I don't want to put all my eggs in the Peppers basket.

Belichick clearly has a bad taste in his mouth after last season, and he is clearly not content with minor tweaks.  He wants to make dramatic changes, and I have a feeling that Vrabel was just the beginning.

Good point about BB having a bad taste.
BTW, congrats on #5000!

Thanks!  Here's a TP for ya.
