I am sure it has already been addressed, but is Joe Smith eligible to play in the playoffs with the Cavs? I thought he was, but I just heard John Ryder on Celtics Rewind say he will not be eligible for the playoffs for the Cavs and that the Cavs just got him to get the #1 seed. Can anyone verify this? If he's wrong I am thinking about calling in and telling him!

No, he's available, because he was released by his old team on March 1st. No player released from their old team after that date is eligible, but Smith is indeed eligible.

He's wrong.  Smith is eligible.  The media is basically made up of a bunch of idiots who don't know the rules.

Smith was waived by March 1.  Therefore, he's eligible for the playoffs.  It doesn't matter when a player clears waivers, or when they sign (so long as it's before the end of the regular season).  If he was waived prior to March 1, he's playoff eligible.

(I'm not sure why this is so hard for those who cover the Celtics to understand.  Sam Cassell didn't clear waivers until March 3 last year, yet he was playoff eligible.)

This doesn't surprise me at all. I always thought that Ryder either knew nothing about basketball or just dumbed down the conversation too much for the late night callers. Well, now I know that Ryder's knowledge is limited, but maybe its a combination of both.

By the way, beyond simply not knowing that Smith was eligible, which was inexcusable on its own, in what universe does Ryder believe that professional franchises commit millions of dollars to players just so they can play for them for a couple of months and help them get a good seed?
