I don't care about (american) football, but I once watched a 60 minutes featuring this player and found him very likable. Here's hoping he can fully recover.

Repairing damaged knee cartilage or reconstructing ligament is, as far as I know (not much), a fairly common procedure these days in pro-sports medicine, via autologous transplantation or using artificial tissues. At least there are more than a few soccer players who went through those procedures, and I'd say that playing soccer is more demanding to the knee that playing QB (or maybe not, I don't know). I remember a particular case, with former Porto's captain Jorge Costa, who had this exact same problem, an infection after a surgery on the ACL, two different times (and in both knees), and a few years later was lifting the Champions League cup, so I'm quite puzzled how is this that threatening.

The Patriots released the following statement tonight:

"Today, ESPN cited an unnamed source who supposedly expressed the feelings of the Patriots ‘organization.’ This unsubstantiated report does not represent the team's views whatsoever. We have supported Tom Brady one hundred percent from day one of this process and will continue to do so. We issued a statement last Saturday expressing our complete organizational support for Tom. That support includes all aspects of the process. Unfortunately, our statement was not mentioned or referenced in ESPN’s report. Today, we reiterate our total support for Tom as he recovers from his injury."

I feel for you guys. Patriots are not my team, but I know what its like to lose a great qb (if that is the case). When Favre retired, it sucked because he could still play. If Brady is done, it would be a shame becaue he has a few lef tin him yet.
Back to wanting Joe fired.

email from my Dad's friend (an orthopedic surgeon)

This could be the end of his career.  Knee joints are rapidly destroyed in the presence of infection, especially with a foreign material present (patellar tendon graft to replace the ACL).  It all depends on how rapidly they recognized it and how soon and how aggressively it was treated.  Even under the best of circumstances it might not be sufficient.  Keep your fingers crossed.

(a) there are a lot of unkowns at this point about Brady, his knee, the infections, so no need to jump to conclusions;
(b) assuming we do the latter -- that is assuming we jump to the worst conclusions possible -- if an infection causes the end of Brady's career, then Pats fan or not, you have to be a little sad about the situation, IMHO.

And to think, recalling back in April during the NFL Draft how the "experts" lambasted the pats for picking O'Connell in the 3rd round.  I guess it's not such a bad pick after all.  Clayton was talking on ESPN radio last night about how bad it is and it could be his career.

Definitely concerned over this latest developement but optimistic.  These surgeries are relatively commonplace these days.  Of course, I do express some concerning over any lingering complications that Brady might experience the rest of his playing career.  Hoping that this infection isn't career threatening and is subdued.

Regarding the ESPN reports, I don't put much credibility in anything that ESPN reports on the Pats.    For the past few years, as far back as '03 season, there is some serious animosity from the Pats organization towards ESPN and I seriously doubt anyone truly "in the know" would be talking to them.
