Now that we have won a World Championship, we can put the Len Bias tragedy in perspective. This gentleman's name will always make Celtic fans ponder, what if? Excellent front page article on ESPN and a documentary is coming out later this year. Just imagine! Len was a freak!

I definitely would like to see this movie.

I read that article this morning and it brought back a lot of memories.  I'm from Maryland, and lived about 10 miles from where Bias grew up.  I'll never forget waking up that morning and my mom telling me that Bias had passed away this morning.  I was 15 years old at the time.

How often does a world championship team pick 2nd in the draft...it was so exciting knowing that Bias would join the C's.  I thought a series dynasty was in the works.  It would have probably added a few more championships in the 80's and into the early 90's.  Sad story.

Thanks for the reminder.  I made it half way through the article yesterday then had to run home (and my computer is down and out at home  :'( ).  The ESPN article is excellent.

This paragraph, in particular, hit home with me - I was a few years older than the author, but never touched coke in my life and the "russian roullette" idea of trying it once and amybe dying was enough to keep me away.

As evidence, I return to myself, at age 13, and all the other children of my generation, products of the skewed value system of the '80s, for whom the most potent advertisement for the "Just Say No" campaign might have been the notion that a single splotch of cocaine -- and this is how I imagined it as a child, that Bias had simply touched several stray crystals of processed coca leaves to his nostrils, and shortly thereafter departed this mortal coil -- could kill us without prejudice, if our bodies were so genetically inclined. This is no doubt a major reason why I have never touched cocaine myself, and why, several years ago, when an acquaintance of mine who was a product of the same generation tried cocaine for the first time, he thought immediately of Len Bias, as I'm sure hundreds or thousands of others did, too.
Yup

You watch video of Bias and it's amazing.  There was no one in the NBA who was like him at that time.  He was the whole package, could shoot, take it to the rim and finish, defend, and possessed ungodly ups.

There is no question he could have been a Hall of Famer.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
i'm currently watching the '86 draft on nbatv...how sad to realize what will soon happen to both bias and the celtics.
