I still remember the first time I got excited about a TPE.  It was when we traded Antoine Walker to Miami, and we created a TPE for slightly over the MLE.  The talk was that we'd have an advantage in free agency because we could offer more than other teams (via a S&T).

That one wasn't used, either.  It's been a long train of wasted TPEs ever since, with some exceptions.  (We used the TPE created in the Pierce/KG trade to pick up a #1.  Did we use a TPE to absorb Brian Grant in the deal to draft Rondo?

I think Grant was making the minimum at the time.

And yes, the Pierce trade was the best use of the TPE we’ll probably ever see.  We got Zeller, Thornton, and a 1st for that TPE, then a few months later traded the pick and Thornton to Phoenix for IT.  It’s not fair to hold TPE’s to that standard, but sometimes they do turn out that way.

A couple other notable ones:

Josh Richardson into a TPE

Evan Fournier into the Hayward TPE.

Lets not forget that the Josh Richardson salary eventually became the basis for matching salary in the Derick White trade. So that's a fairly big addition at least partially due to TPE use.

Evan Fourier was kind of a waste, but at least they took a swing. They ended up getting one for his salary when he left but that expired, partly because they went after Brogdon that summer and he didn't fit the TPE.

They don't always get used, but sometimes. My hope is with all these extra seconds they are able to do a player into TPE for a bundle of seconds type trade before the deadline. We've seen useful rotation players go for like 2-4 seconds recently mid year.
