A lot is going to come down to what kind of value he has on the "market". I think this is going to work out for the Celtics. His value is going to be a lot less than he may have hoped and the Celtics will get him on a reasonable deal.
Yeah, I thought last season went badly for him.
I liked the gamble he took passing on the offer last summer but things did not work out well for him. They were going okay until midseason when his shot fell off which may be (likely is) related to the wrist injury he suffered.
But he went from rotation regular to DNP in favour of Hauser. Then he continued to be benched early in the playoffs. He barely played against ATL. Only 2 games with real PT. In and out of rotation against PHI. Only 3 games with double digit minutes. DNP again to start MIA series before playing a big role the rest of the way. Playing okay but not well against MIA.
So the whole second half of the regular season was a bust for him value wise and the playoffs did little to repair that value given he was in and out of the team for the first 14 games (5 double digit PT games, 5 DNPs, 2 games under 5min and 1gm at 8min) and only played okay in the final 6 games when he got 25mpg. Not enough to restore confidence / value.
So Grant is not coming into FA off of the strong season he hoped to have. Or even the solid season he hoped to have. It was a disappointing season. And his value will have taken a hit.
I see his value as closer to the $10-15mil range heading into FA rather than the $15-20mil he was hoping for last summer. I thought had a legit shot at the $15-20mil because of the cap increases but I don't think his season went well enough for him to get that payday.
We should be able to make that work and we should be confident that we can trade that contract further down the road if we need to in order to make the cap numbers work. That should be a tradeable contract. I like our odds. Not a sure thing but I like our odds.
