Per Keith Smith, these were the 2nd rounders:

2024 — Dallas
2025 — Best of Detroit, Golden State, and Washington
2026 — Best of Minnesota, New York, New Orleans, and Portland
2027 — Atlanta

That’s a pretty solid collection.  One each year where before we had none, and a couple that seem very likely to fall very early in the 2nd.

So if you assume that we started with #35, ended up with #38 but then essentially got the following for Marcus Smart:

Porzingis
2024  1st — GSW (Protected 1-4 in 2024)
2024 2nd — Dallas
2025 2nd — Best of Detroit, Golden State, and Washington
2026 2nd — Best of Minnesota, New York, New Orleans, and Portland
2027 2nd — Atlanta

That is what we got for Marcus Smart as of today?  That seems like more than what WAS got for Beal (essentially Poole and a bunch of picks, mostly seconds).

Those second round picks are going to be important for a team over the second apron.  That is how we are going to fill out our roster since we won't be able to do trades (that bring back more money) or sign vet min contracts.  These seconds are going to be the low cost roster spots and/or 2-way players that are going to be important.  The first round picks too.

One note:  Bobby Manning reports the 2025 Detroit pick has some protection

There's protections specifically on the Detroit part of it, that is top 55 protected. Its best to think of the 25' pick as the better of WAS and GSW because DET isn't going to be one of the 5 best teams.

That’s not accurate.  The Detroit pick is top-55 protected to NY.  In other words, if Detroit picks 56-60, then it goes to NY and can’t come to us.  If they pick at 31-55, then we can get it assuming it’s the best of the three.  So the protection only matters if all three of Detroit, Golden State, and Washington have too 5 records.  I’m willing to bet against that.

Yep you're right, read it wrong.

So the bottom line is that if by some miracle, the DET pick in 2025 ends up 56-60, it would go to NYK and we would get the better of the GSW or WAS picks?  Otherwise, we get the better of the 3?  That sounds like we end up with a decent second round pick in any case.

Correct.  That pick should be in the early 2nd round.

All those picks have some decent upside. WAS and or DET are a good bet to stink in 25.

All those picks have SOME upside. DAL still has to fill out its roster, not impossible that DAL 24' pick is late lottery. WAS and/or DET a good bet to stink in 25'. Best pick from from teams in 26' a good bet to be good. ATL might be rebuilding by 27'. Could end up being 4 picks better than 45.

This seems like a bet that the new CBA will make 2nds more valuable.

That, plus look at last year's trade deadline, along with the Beal trade.  Lots of buyers are out of first rounders, so second rounders are becoming the currency.

Yeah, and the celtics have something like 9 first rounders now? seems like brad wants to be flexible so that if they need a piece at the trade deadline he can make a move.

have to say, so far I think Brad has done a pretty good job of a GM since he took over. At the end of his tenure I think Ainge was starting to be too obsessed with collecting "assets" and then hoarding them which lead to some unbalanced roster.

Brad took what ainge left him with and turned it into Horford, White, Brogdon, Porzingis.

If you look at that roster before the trade deadline in the 2021-2022 season its crazy how different it was...
