I think most of us will agree that our roster is out of balance. Our front court is out of depth, while we have guards who are longing for more minutes or aren't having the impact we could expect. There are certainly options like Poeltl, Holmes or Turner who could be obtained if we really wanted to. I definitely think we should be exploring the market.

When finding a trading partner you need a team that's on the other end (a contender like the Celtics should be talking to non-contenders) or a team that's in disarray. When thinking about disarray you immediately think of the Lakers, but perhaps a little bit underexposed are the Nets. And with all the commotion around Irving, he's actually playing superb as well as Durant, yet they're 1-4.

Now the obvious scapegoat is Simmons. And there you go. His trading value has never been lower, he's still young and he was a DPOY candidate. He can play in the front court, rebound and defend multiple positions. His glaring lack of shooting is less of a problem with a team like the Celtics that's now full with shooters and scorers.

Example:

To Celtics: Simmons
To Nets: Smart, Gallinari, Kornet, Vonleh, Jackson

Getting DPOY Smart is attractive for the Nets.
Trade can be completed at December 14th, when restrictions on trade expire.
The roster spots that become available gives opportunities during the buy-out period.

New rotation:

White (24) - Pritchard (16)
Brown (32) -  Brogdon (28)
Tatum (32) - Hauser (12)
Horford (24) - G. Williams (20)
Simmons (28) - R. Williams (24)

Marcus>Ben and fits this team’s culture. He also makes less $

Here we go, Smart has a bad game and the obligatory ‘trade Smart’ thread goes up. That’s fine, but for Simmons and Gallinari? Way too much to give up. Beyond that, I don’t want head-case Simmons anywhere near this team. To quote a certain teammate of his, “Shoot the ball, man!”

Yes, I really want to. Give me a real center.

No way we should trade our guy with the most heart for a guy without one.

- a trade for a big man --> sure, if Brad can't get Favors in here as a FA and the other well known FAs just aren't an option
- Use Smart as a trade chip to fill a big hole in the front court --> sure, I'm game if it's a good deal for the C's but it has to bring back a starting-caliber player
- Trading the current DPOY player that is all hustle and loves being a C for a player that's at best ineffective, can't shoot, isn't a front court player which is the hole we need to fill and shows no signs he even want to play basketball --> HELL NO

Need to go get a mop to clean up the sick after this post. I wouldn't trade that package for Simmons without Smart, let alone with him

Now that we have Brogdon, if he can stay healthy then we certainly have the option to trade Smart for an upgrade at 4/5. But Smart is kind of our heart and soul on defense. Simmons is not who we thought he would be 3-4 years ago.

At this point bad back Simmons isn't worth the cost he would take to acquire
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards -

Smart's more valuable, and better, than Simmons straight up at this point.
