I would not want Elon Musk owning this team.

Ime dug his own grave when he decided to roll with short rotation. Guys like Theis and Nesmith can provide different looks and may have helped in some games.

Yeah, he screwed up not playing Theis and instead relying on PP. Pairing PP with D-White at the end of the 1st dug us a hole so big there was no digging ourselves out. PP is streaky and will probably never be a decent enough defender to be part of a championship rotation, which we saw tonight.

All eight top rotation guys + nesmith and Theis are under contract. If all the c's do is fill out the end of their bench with minimums they will be like 3-4 million into the tax (rough estimate). Basically, for this team to make major changes ownership has to ok a bigger tax bill then they've ever paid.

Ideally they will stack 10-15 million more salary on to the books via the TPE and enter next year 15-20 million in the tax. Ownership says they will pay for a contender, now they have to prove it. They can free up osme money by moving theis and just signing a vet min 4th center.

Targets to chase: a 3+D wing to take minutes off Tatum/Brown, a high level shooter to  diversify the offense, a vet PG for the second unit.

No doubt PP and White had terrible games, I posted the box score earlier on how bad their games were. But part of the issue is that Ime had to go small because the Warriors were running with a small lineup all game with Porter and Looney in the 4 spot and Draymond at the 5. Theis got cooked by the Warriors in Game 2 and everyone was saying to never play him again, let's not get short memories. We were struggling to defend the 3 point line as it was.

It's easy to be critical in hindsight and try and throw people who have been not part of the main group into the fray because "nothing's working" but these were the guys he trusted. Unfortunately they let him down in key moments, like during that 35-8 run, where there was a 20-0 inside it. White missed a number of layups at the rim during that period. Smart picked up his 3rd foul early in the 2nd quarter and that forced Ime to play White more minutes. The Dubs are the best in the league at playing small.

All that being said, 4 points production from the bench on 2-10 shooting isn't good enough, given how short the rotation is. Being outscored by GS's bench when Steph is sitting is even worse because everyone on the court should be focused on maintaining our defensive shape. It didn't help that we had a lot of turnovers from Tatum and Brown when those bench guys were on and the Dubs killed us in transition.

Well, I’d gladly take that hit again over that big 21-0 point hole courtesy of PP/D-White. We go with D-White/Theis, maybe it’s more like a 21-8 hole and we manage to comeback and win.

I'm not as down on the bench as others.

I was very impressed with the C's setup during this playoff run. They had 7 above average NBA players and they kept them on the court as much as possible to maximize their chances. Very few playoff teams were able to compete with this depth.

Then they used three situational subs beyond their main 7 with Pritchard (small guard) Nesmith (wing) Theis (mobile big). That gave a steady 7 and a variable 8th man dependent on need. That worked well also. Well except for Nesmith.

I see small changes to the end of the bench 10th-15th men as necessary and hopefully an upgrade for Nesmith. Nothing too major.

I was very happy with the play of D White and G Williams by and large. D White has always been an inconsistent scorer but rock solid in non-scoring contributions and he was that during the playoffs. G Williams gave us a valuable bulky big forward to stay big while stretching the floor. His contributions were key against BKN and MIL and had a huge game against MIA. He was quiet in the Finals but overall a very good season from him. The quality play from these two guys was really impressive.

Improve the bench by adding veterans. Nesmith is still a complete unknown to me - if his jumpshot never starts to fall then he's basically locked in as a bust, much like Romeo Langford.

Grant and PP are decent, but limited. More 8-9 guys than 7-8 guys IMO (at least as of now).

I will keep banging the Thad Young drum all summer. Especially if we can dump Theis.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

You can either help the guys you have to improve which would mean including playing time during the regular season. Or you can bring in guys that Ime will trust and play.  I think Ime was the right coach for this team at this point but I really felt that Brad trusted every guy on the roster, maybe even to his detriment. I'd like to have a full 15 man roster full of players that could play during the season and at least 10 guys that Ime can trust in the playoffs.

I liked Hauser, Thomas, and Morgan in the little time I saw them. We sure could've used Hauser in the finals when we couldn't shoot.

I think they've been ducking the tax because they don't want to start getting into repeater territory before they actually have a contender. This will be the summer they spend.

And not a minute too soon. Grant and PP disappeared in the Finals. Hopefully they'll come back better next year but that was disheartening.

I posted this in another thread:

Two free agency names I keep thinking about are Otto Porter and Mo Bamba.

Porter is a big, versatile wing who can shoot 3's and play defense and the Warriors tax situation is insane. Maybe he wants to jump over to the ship that's one the rise. He's got a bad injury history but he's only 29.

If Orlando is drafting yet another big man, Bamba might be the odd man out there. He's got legit size, he's only 24, and last year he become something of a 3-point shooter. He can back up Rob and if that 3-point shooting is real and the plan remains to start Rob on wings (and if Rob's passing finally becomes part of the offensive gameplan), I could even see Rob and Bamba out there together, shutting down the rim.

This team didn't spend on the bench last year because wyd said they "weren't a championship team" in hindsight that killed them.

Biggest difference in this series was GS had guys like Poole and Wiggins step up and Celtics had....no one. They doubled up Tatum and that was it offense was dead. Prichard, grant and Williams turned back into a pumpkin

We need to build a solid bench next year with shooting. Spend the MLE. Get roleplayers who can score.

In January when Wyc said this the team wasn't a championship team, and no one thought they were and were talking about moving on of the Jays. They were on a nice run right before the deadline, but a lot of people thought it was fools gold, could have made a major move and the team goes sideways.

Now if they don't spend, or at least try to spend money this summer(can't make people come here or teams make trades with you) They you can complain about Wycs spending. Throwing money at the problem in January wasn't going to fix things, you had to get the core guys on board and willing to play the right way.
