You don't do a total rebuild unless you're forced to. There are no guarantees that you won't be looking at several years of sucking and in a city like Boston that just won't fly. The thing is, all it would take is for Tatum to say 'I want out' and we'll in fact be looking at a total rebuild.
Yep. With no assets left. It can happen so easily with a few more losses. Better to instead quietly and quickly do the trades in one fell, sharp, shock at the deadline, tank us for a top pick in 2022 (we are very close to a top 3 pick as-is):
Bet that Golden State would give us a ton of picks, Wiseman, Kuminga, and Moody for Tatum (they would need to ship out Looney to make the dollars match). The side benefit for us is we 100% ensure the Lakers/LeBron do not win a title between now and the completion of our rebuild, so that’s another great benefit to sending Tatum to GS. The golden rule is BEAT LA and, if that cannot be done, help someone else Beat LA.
In terms of Brown, send him to OKC for Giddey and a plethora of all those picks they have. Unlike Ainge, they’re actually interested in not wasting all those picks on Dancing French Bears. Move Smart for a pick. Move Richardson for a pick. Move Schröder for a pick. Move Langford for whatever protected second we can get or don’t pick him up this off-season. Same goes for Nesmith. Don’t care if they were 14th overall, they suck and will not amount to anything more than James Young. Two more blown picks by Utah’s Fortunate Son.
Really, move the whole team for youth/picks (including Langford/Nesmith) and keep Grant, Timelord and maybe Pritchard. Those two or three with Giddey, Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody and picks is a lot more exciting than clinging to Ainge’s DGAF era final disaster because he knew he had the Utah parachute. It would also give us cap room to go after Jokic next year. He may be swayed by max money, the marketing dollars associated with being the next great Celtic, closer proximity to Europe than any team in the NBA, a stable of rising youth, salary for another free agent buddy he can bring along for the ride as his Robin and our hopes being that Giddey or Wiseman would make it a Big 3 right away with Jokic/Buddy, and Coach Brad Stevens (Yes, Coach) back.
