I was thinking that Al Horford is likely in the twilight of his career and his value will begin to diminish in the coming years. I’ve got to imagine he seeks to end his career with the Celtics and would be open to a team friendly extension. A veteran presence like Al could be favorable from the Celtics standpoint in terms of seeking to create continuity amongst this unit. I dug up some info on veteran contract extensions and Al’s contract for consideration of the approach above.
On Al’s Contract:
Only $14,500,000 guaranteed in 2022/23, HoopsHype has learned. He would get $19,500,000 guaranteed if his team makes it to the NBA Finals in 2021/22. His 2022/23 would be fully guaranteed if his team wins the NBA championship.
On Early Extension (Incentive Clause):
If a contract contains incentive bonuses, a veteran extension must contain the same bonuses. The bonus amounts can be increased or decreased by up to 8%, but they must still be part of the deal. An extension also can’t contain bonuses that weren’t part of the original
Would a very team friendly contract extension with the championship incentive layered on top be mutually beneficial?
