Apparently, we are trying to dump Kris Dunn. Was wondering which team might be interested in him. The Knicks might be a good shout.

- Thibs drafted him at Minny. He was their coach/GM at the time.
- Generally speaking, Thibs loves defensive-minded players.
- Kemba, D-Rose and Quickley are offensive-minded guards. Dunn fills a need for them.

What would we want in return from the Knicks, given that they cannot absorb his contract? Well, we are worryingly thin at the swing positions. At the same time, we are probably unwilling to take back long-term salary. We could have a use for a swing on an expiring contract. Kevin Knox fits the bill.

Don't think the Knicks would do it straight up. Throw in Grant Williams as well. I could see Thibs being intrigued by his defensive potential. He's also under team control for the next 2 seasons (which is likely irrelevant for us cause we may prefer the cap space).

PG: Schroder - Pritchard - Edwards
SG: JRich - Smart - Romeo
SF: Brown - Nesmith - (Hauser)
PF: Tatum - Knox - Jabari
C: Horford - Timelord - Kanter - Bruno

Personally speaking, I'd start Nesmith over JRich, but that's just me.

Voted Knicks but I do think it's a good deal for Knicks more than C's. Feel Knicks could use Knox for a mid-season deal and would rather keep that option open.

I posted this on Reddit but it seems relevant to this conversation.

Other than trading players into a teams cap space. The C's could trade players into TPEs. Here is a list of current (non-celtics) TPEs that could absorb Dunn, Bruno, or preferably (to me) Edwards.

I think Bruno and Edwards could be traded to a team for a highly protected 2nd and cash. I wonder if the Cs want to play Dunn to let him recover some value. I could see a Western playoff team wanting him as a reserve to defend players like Booker, Paul or Westbrook if he's healthy.

Knox is worse than Jabari and Grant, and gets worse every season. Hardest of passes.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

I don't think either team wants any of those players.

Both teams say no.

Houston, Indiana, Utah have trade exceptions where they could take on Dunn from us. Utah looks the most likely of those 3 to me. We might have to throw in a 2nd rounder.

My hope is to aggregate Dunn and a smaller salary for a competent PF.  Dunn and Langford for Kyle Anderson, for instance.  Or Dunn, Grant, and Carsten plus a 2nd for Anderson.  Memphis seems into trading their expirings for other expirings and fringe young players.

The idea of packaging Dunn with one of Parker, GWill, or Fernando for one better player is in theory a good approach, I just don't think Knox is a player we need.  The outgoing salary would be around $7M of expiring contracts (or in the case of Parker nonguaranteed) but pretty low grade talent no one is really going to have any use for.  If we could send this out and get back a starting PF or even just a PF upgrade, it would be worth it.  Otherwise, we will have to just cut someone to get down to 15 (Edwards would be the leader in the club house to be cut in my opinion).

Any trade of Dunn with another player would have to be after the waiting period so maybe something is in the works but just still under wraps.  I have my doubts.

This would be a fantastic outcome.

Utah is over the luxury tax, correct?  There's no way they'll take on that much salary.

Is OKC still way below the cap?  They seem like a likely dumping ground for salary.

Personally speaking, I'd start Nesmith over JRich, but that's just me.

I’d rather just dump Edwards. Least Kris is a legit NBA player. Plus, I feel like either Smart or Schröder will be traded at some point before the deadline. So Dunn could be useful.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Agreed.

Edwards + cash for a heavily protected second-round pick that will never convey

I started this thread prior to the Smart extension under the assumption that we we were unwilling to take back long-term salary. Don't think the trade makes much sense anymore. That said, the results suggest it might be a fair trade, at least value-wise. I mean, half the posters think the C's would say no. The other half think the Knicks would say no. Seems like a fair trade after all.
