A couple of thoughts from reading this thread:

Washed up is almost universally used to describe someone who is no longer successful or effective.

Most athletes age like milk, but there are some players who really don't function well in a particular system or team that may appear to be washed but could positively contribute to the right team.

Chris Paul had a Horford-esque year in the regular season, since the conversation has gone like this (effective, but not washed up, but absolutely washed up if you're celticsclay and washed up just means losing a step). He is have a brilliant series against Denver, but that's only two games.
This is correct.  The one guy that I think most people regarded as washed up that has really turned it around is Derrick Rose.  I mean there was thought a few years back that the only reason he wasn't going to retire was to keep getting paid by Adidas.  And there he was as a finalist for 6th man of the year, receiving a 1st place vote for MVP, and generally looking like a nice solid NBA player again and contributing on a winning team.  He obviously is no where near his MVP peak, but he also isn't looking like a guy on his last legs like he was at the end of the 17-18 season.

  • Peace it's a board. We all will never agree.
I believe Kemba is going to have a strong year. I also hope Brad gives IT a roster spot. He deserves to play in Boston one more time. I also think Jabari will be more healthy and be an asset for the  Celtics!

Don’t really understand what the heck you are talking about with me or chris paul here. Chris paul was a top 5 mvp candidate. That is a regular season award. How the heck is that a horford esque year?

Jabari Parker is 28, and is not washed up. He is not the same player, but not washed up. Kudos to Danny for locking him in through next season. Could solve some power forward stuff for us, at least on the bench.

Al Horford? His productivity last season matched that when he played with us. I think he has a few more years in the tank. I think he is 34?

Lebron will be 37, and no one is writing him off anytime soon.

Horford is absolutely washed up. Is this a joke? He was a perennial all star and will never come close to an all star game again. If you say someone is washed up it doesn’t mean they are not an nba player but just not nearly what they were. Horford is never going to play more than 26 minutes a game or so. He is significantly less than what he was.

Significantly less?  That's fair.  But he was still a 14 / 7 guy last season with good efficiency.

His production on a per minute / per possession basis is actually almost exactly in line with what it was his last two All-Star seasons in Atlanta.  In fact, Horford's per-minute scoring last year was the second highest of his career.

My opinion still the same by the way. Roy when I say washed up I am more referring to defensive side of the ball, he still seems to have most of it on offense. I think his lateral quickness is down a bit to a decent amount, which is really hard for switching and covering P n R (also a big part of what made him such a good player). I do have the same expectations for him before we traded him for. Think he will get about 26-27 minutes and maybe put up 11-13pt and 5-6 rebounds. I am also concerned that he took the entire second half of season off at his age because I feel like it is harder to shake off rust the older you get. Compared to his prime with Atlanta and with us when he was making all-star teams I do think he is what i would call washed up. That doesn't mean I don't think he can be a decent role player. It just a decent drop for a guy that was a 5 time all star, made all nba third team and all defensive second team in his career.

Should I dare and say it?
…Al Hofford if not washed up; is pretty darn close to it

I am hoping he has a playoff run left in the tank

Al Horford's scoring efficiency (TS%) the last two years were the lowest of his career and similar to his rookie year. He took more three pointers than ever before with 40% and 42% of his FGAs coming on three pointers.

His FTA:FGA ratio fell to a career low (unbelievably low) rate of 6%. League average is more like 30%. That is one of the lowest FT rates I have ever seen. Horford averaged a free throw (1.3) every 100 possessions. That is only 0.8 FTAs per game relative to 12.9 FGAs a night (more than he averaged in Boston which was 10.5 FGAs per game his final two years, 11.8 his first year).

It is hard to be an efficient scorer when you are getting to the FT line that little. FTs are the most efficient scoring tool in basketball. Horford is a good outside shooter but not a great shooter -- 36% from three point range this year and for his career. Oddly enough, Horford was a great catch and shoot two point (midrange) shooter but he rarely does that anymore.

His FT numbers are deeply troubling. They are also a strong indicator of a player's declining physical ability (which we already know some of from his final season here and previous year in Philadelphia).

Wow, those are pretty stunning numbers! I had been pretty against Horford coming back but I hadn’t even looked at his FT stats, jeesh!

Hopefully with all that rest he comes back reinvigorated. Won’t be playing 30+ minutes either, which may help.

As much as I have called him washed up on this forum I’m still praying like hell he proves me wrong.
