Quote
"Perk has been huge for me," Thompson said. "Our first year going to the Finals, Perk was on the team and he was very instrumental in terms of me taking that growth, in terms of being an enforcer and never really taking any crap from nobody."

"So Perk's been huge, and as soon as I committed to the Celtics I called him the next day and he said, 'You're the piece that they need and you're going to do great here.' So It's always good when one of your mentors and OGs support a decision like that and are happy for you."

From a thread posted by reddit user (1337speak)..

Tatum called Perkins after Perkins called him out saying, "Time to step up and live up to your role, straight up."

Listening to NBC Sports Boston right now and Perkins said that Tatum called him following the comments. Tatum wanted to hear what Perkins had to say and they had a conversation about it. He said Tatum didn't get sensitive and take it to social media, but took the time to reach out through a mutual friend (Trevor Trout who grew up with Tatum). Perkins clarified to Tatum that he meant that Tatum had a very high ceiling and thinks he could be playing at an even higher level night in and out.

I thought this spoke to the kind of person Tatum is - hearing criticism and wanting to act on it.

I remember a few years back, Perk inquired about joining the Celtics as a 3rd string player/motivator.   Danny didn't go for it.

Why not Danny?

Earlier this season,  Mike Gorman was critical of the Jays.   Not much of a response/change came after.   But since big Perk was critical of Tatum about a week ago.  Tatum is playing possessed basketball.    Not sure if it was Perk,  media scrutiny,  Tristan Thompson and other vet leadership etc. But something has clicked.

Looks like some of those radio guys were on point. Brad Stevens was not going to get through to him (next level) but somebody else hopefully could,  like how Rivers has for Embiid.

To add to this,  Walker and Smart recently harped on team accountability.   Holding each other accountable.  Making the right play etc.   Thompson before the season started,  mentioned how important these factors were ..... to build a successful team.   Thompson was a nice signing. Credit to Ainge

Not every former player who makes a comment about the team needs or wants to be a coach, guys.

I think that ship has sailed.   He looks content as a media guy providing his two cents.

2-3 years ago.  If Danny brought him in as the 15th guy ala Udonis Haslem. ... could have helped

like you stated, the players would listen and respond.    +  intimidating looking dude.

Don’t know if you saw, but Drew Hanlon chirped back pretty hard against Perk. They had some back and forth. No idea how the players really take Perk. Seems like he’s trying to leverage up into being a media personality - he’s got to create and sell controversy.

I mean you read the quote by Thompson on how Perk helped him out

Also Tatum called him and sounds like took Perk criticism/channeled it positively

Perk is a champion

That's because Perkins isn't that great at the nitty gritty aspects of basketball for perimeter players (I think he advocated for some questionable stuff in his scuffle with Drew Hanlen on Twitter). But he's still good to enough to see the obvious flaws in Tatum's game (eg. passing, tendency to be very methodical with the ball, etc) and 'coach' Tatum some broad ideas on how the improve.

Hanlen is part of what is wrong with nba..he does not show team oriented skills in his training.

As for Tatum....he is growing and getting more muscular ..he is going to be a beast.

Perk was a career role player who could never hold a candle to Tatum’s talent. Nowadays he stirs things up; it’s part of his media brand.

Maybe we are getting the full story of what they said behind the scenes. Maybe not. Hanlen certainly made clear he didn’t appreciate the comments - or maybe he’s building his own brand, by sticking up for his player in this public beef.

Fair enough.

I just find Perk’s act a little tired, and I question him trying to claim credit for the turnaround. He’s called everybody soft at one time or another, and it’s not like he had a lot of new points to make. I also think the change started before the call out and has more to do with other things.

Same with Haslem vs Butler/Adebayo

You are underselling these vets who have been there and knows what it takes

Perk played alongside many players that are as good or better than Tatum. Perk has played with greatness. Just because Perk isn't as talented as those players or Tatum doesn't mean he didn't learn how to be great by being around said players.

Perk knows the mindset those greats had, the work ethic, the leadership, the BBIQ, the desire, the drive, the regimental training they adhered to that made those players so special.

Perk had every right to call out Tatum. Perk knows what it takes to win titles. Tatum, like the pro he seems to be, called Perk. Perkins had a good talk with Tatum giving him some wisdom.

What Perkins knows, Hanlon can't necessarily teach. Hanlon should have thicker skin and respond to criticism like a pro, like the 23 year old Tatum did.
