Does Hayward pickup his player option or leave for a longer contract?

I keep going back and forth on whether we need to trade Hayward for bench reinforcement and such or even Oladipo and turner with picks included.
I think that Miami is so far ahead everyone in the East in terms of the make up of their team and identity and will only going to be getting better.
Maybe trade picks and Hayward only for a real difference maker like Giannis, Durant , lebron or Kawhi. Since those are impossible at this point and without trading the Js... maybe makes the most sense to Just draft 3-4 guys and see if they can make the quick jump in their development the way Heats young players did this year.

I keep seeing people suggest Myles Turner and I don't get it. Have people really watched him play? He's fine enough, I guess. But I don't think he'd turn our fortunes the way other people seem to. I'm starting to wonder if some folks are in love with what they think Myles Turner could be instead of evaluating him based on what he is. And Oladipo's play was leveling out before he got injured, I'm not sure what anyone should expect from him next year. A quad rupture is significant. A quad rupture to a player who relies on his athleticism the way Oladipo does could be career deterring.

My approach to Gordon would be to see how interested he may be in opting out and extending. If you could convince him to resign for 4 years in the $70-80m range with a deal that decreases in salary every year, I'd do it.

Look at the previous 2 max all stars we had : they both didn’t resign. I think in this case injuries will be the deciding factor for Celtics not offering him a rich deal. I think Kemba is trending in that direction too.

I think all players are different with varying priorities. For Kyrie, he wanted to play with his buddy in an organization that would let him have a ton of say over personnel. With Al, money was always going to take priority. That seemed clear during his previous free agency in Atlanta - that if they offered him a full max deal, he would've stayed. With Gordon, it depends on what his priorities are. If there's a number that Danny & co. are comfortable with and Gordon is amenable to it, I think he extends. If not, then we won't. I'd rather the team not do a panic move, and I think trading for Turner & Oladipo would be a panic move.

I don’t think ownership will let danny do that. Unless Hayward takes a 7-8 M a year contract after next season I think he’s gone sooner or later before next season starts.

Huh?? You really think Hayward is only worth $8 mil per??? I think the Cs can get Hayward on an 3 year extension worth around $20 mil per. I think that’s roughly what he’s worth.

He actually had quite a decent year, but you are probably right. He will be 31 when his next contract begins, and while that is not old, he can't expect to have another injury riddled season and still receive a $20M+ long-term contract. The only reason the Cs can do that now is because they owe him $34M this upcoming season and would want to bring down the AAV.

If the Cs did offer him, say, a 4yr/$80M contract, I would not be surprised if he took it. I realize that only amounts to $15.3M/yr after this year, but that's also quite a bit more than the MLE and it's not like he has a spotless injury history. Ill-timed nagging injuries could limit him to the MLE, but Cousins/Thomas type injuries could make him vet minimum.

Agreed.  He'll never win father of the year, but 15.3M/yr is probably fair value for Hayward.  It puts him in the league of a Marcus Smart and those two guys are essentially vying for the 6th man/5th starter role.

If anyone in the league wants to pay Hayward 25-30 million a year you have to let them; he's not a legit threat to score 20 points per game and is injury prone.  No contender can afford to invest such a high percentage of their cap on Hayward.

We're in a bad position cap-wise. It would really only allow us to offer the full MLE rather than the taxpayer and the Bi-Annual Exception if Hayward opted out, we kept Ojeleye and Kanter, and we renounced all our cap holds.

Unless we trade Kemba we're only going to be looking at specialists with the money available

If they can get him for 5 years/90, or even (gulp) 5 years/100, it’s kind of an overpay, but (1) they won’t be able to get a free agent as good as Hayward for the MLE, and (2) if Hayward’s salary comes down they can get under the tax. Staying out of the tax next year means they can out off paying the repeater tax *and* the cap should go up in the later years. Will Gordo be producing at ~20 mill in his year 36 season? I doubt it. But the early years will be good value and they’ll save on the tax.

Yeah, I agree. Staying out of the tax would be great for us and remaining in a competitive environment would be great for Hayward. I don't think Gordon should expect the good fortune that occurred with Horford (upper-level team, killer contract) - oftentimes, it is one or the other.

I'm not in love with paying Gordon $20M/yr long-term, but maybe the medical staff can alleviate concerns of future injury issues. If we did this, I could see Smart then being the piece moved in a deal for a big. Gobert, Turner, Collins come to mind, but I am sure there are others. I am not by any means dying to get rid of Smart, but I do worry that he won't be content with his 6th man role when our team is fully healthy.
