Larry Bird on WEEI: "I just think [Boston] is the greatest place in the world to play any sport ... You've got the best fans in the world in every sport."

"It’s the greatest place on Earth," Larry Bird says of Boston. "People should be fortunate that they live there."

So why did he leave?"

“I’ll tell you why I left: because the Big Dig was coming in when I was leaving. I knew that was going to be 20-something years.”

I think Bird is just playing to the Boston fans here. I have no doubt he loved playing for the Celtics and really appreciated how passionate and supportive the fans are, but he was always an Indiana guy at heart. He played in Boston, but Indiana was home.

Never been to BOS but I'd bet I will have a blast when I make it there.

Be THANKFUL, those who live there and can claim those sports juggernauts as your own (Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, Celtics).

I am a diehard Washington Redskin fan, since 1980.

My tears are real. The New York Knicks have NOTHING on The Redskins.

Well, it’s hard to shake off your love for the place you’ve lived all your life. And I think Bird is sincere. He was a blue collar player in a blue collar city

I'm with you on the Skins brother.  been a fan since about '77.  Snyder sucks way more as an owner than Dolan

a Skins TP to you since that's the only joy you'll get this year from anything related to the Skins

He is and I'm not going to fall for it.  But I'm also fine if Larry wants to pander to Boston fans.  Larry can say whatever he wants, he's earned that right.

My son plays Madden and you KNOW it's bad when even MADDEN doesn't have John Riggins, Joe Theismann OR The Hogs.

John Riggins was "The Diesel" before Shaq was. Shaq STOLE his nickname.

I've been in a perpetual Vince Lombardi loop for almost 30 years.

What ??  Bird has always spoken in glowing terms regarding the city and the people and how much he loved playing for the Celtics. Just because he went home to Indiana doesn't negate that at all. Why do you think they have to be mutually exclusive. He's a small town guy from Indiana - of course, he went home.
