Just saw an interview of Jayson Tatum on ESPN and was asked about the team's winning in the playoffs and being counted out each series and he replied "Like JB says, its working. Let them think that." I have seen a couple of people(players/reporters) talk about what Brown says behind the scenes. Stephen A Smith was quoting Brown on ESPN about talking about the team growth and so forth.

Now Kyrie was brought on for this to be his team. He would be the alpha and lead this team. But, IMO, as Brown does things like playing through pain, leading the team in scoring, rallying his team mates courtside and become a 2 way terror, all in just his 2nd playoffs, is this team eventually going to turn out to be his team? He seems to have that drive, that swagger, that special something to lead a team.

It would not surprise me in the least if by next year's playoffs are over that this is looked at as Brown's, more so than it will be Kyrie's. Maybe that's too early but Brown's improvement curve is beyond exponential. His talent, drive, intelligence, work ethic and willingness to play big in big moments, makes me wonder if Brown has what it takes to someday take control of this team of excellent talents and become the next Celtic captain.

Love Brown. Could see him as quiet leader type like Al. But he doesn’t seem like a typical type A leader like Bird, Magic, Jordan or Lebron. Not sure who fits that personae on our current squad. Probably Kyrie. Good post.

You can't have too many good leaders. Boston has some good ones. Since Paul Pierce left Washington has none. Toronto could also use one.

This is still Al Horford's team.  He's the true leader in the locker room and player guys look to when times get tough.  As long as he is here I think it stays that way.

But if by "alpha" you simply mean best offensive player, well that will be Kyrie for a few more seasons, eventually to be supplanted by Tatum.

Brads talked a ton about how he works to create an environment where everyone can take a piece of ownership of the team and no one player picks up the leadership mantle.

It's why they don't have a captain and why they banned rookie hazing.

Some guys take more prominent roles than others but I don't think it will ever really be "Browns team" even now you could argue Smart Horford Brown and Irving all play leadership roles

If he keeps playing like he did yesterday I'd say it'll be his team in maybe 3 games or so.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I think some people may be missing your point about Jaylen and his leadership qualities, nick. I totally agree with your post and think he absolutely has it all - both on the court and off the court.

Remember when Jaylen hosted his very own, "Welcome to the NBA Night" during Vegas summer league for players under 21 or "Tech Hustle" during All-Star weekend? These are not normal things for 2nd year players to do. His work ethic on the court has shined through even making him one of the leading candidates for Most Improved Player, but he offers a lot more than on-court leadership.

He definitely has a ton of leadership qualities...  I can see it happening in a few years for sure.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
He talks the talk and he walks the walk.

High motor and no quit.

He's gonna be one of those guys you need on a championship team if he's not that already *wink wink*

Brown has great leadership qualities. As do most players on the current team in the Stevens system. I like the Stevens philosophy which emphasises that leadership is about playing your part and stepping up when required, not being someone who barks orders or struts around like an alpha.

Al is the experienced player who the team look to, Stevens has said he listens when Al talks. Stevens has also praised Baynes for his leadership and maturity in situations like when he doesn't start. That is a great example of the Stevens approach.

Brown is obviously a bright guy who will have a lot to contribute on and off the court.
