A 7-footer who plays 6-4 is never going to be worth $20 million, to the Celtics or anyone else
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

He's going to want somewhere around $20M being an offensively versatile big who can shoot in another rising cap.

I'm not sure that I'm ready to pay him that.

Define Shoot?

Player is slow, cannot play D, has zero post up game and throws up more bricks than baskets. He is a backup player in this League at best. No way this Player is the answer at any starting position

Was 14th in the NBA in 3-point shooting.  He can shoot.

You're also missing the point.  Olynyk isn't the answer, but top reserves get paid $15-20 million now, and 7-footers who can pass and are amongst the top 3-point shooters in the league are top reserves if not starters.

Olynyk will get paid.  If it doesn't prevent the Celtics from getting a star free agent, and I don't think it will, then the Celtics should be the ones paying him.

As you've previously discussed, this is going to be difficult. If either Blake or Hayward want to sign with us, then we'll need to release his cap hold, right (I don't have the numbers in front of me)?

I like the idea of trying to acquire one of them at the deadline so that we retain their Bird Rights and can sign KO, but then you are basically choosing KO over whoever/whatever you are trading away for one of those players (plus the very likely scenario that you will keep Blake/Hayward).

KO is a very nice player - in this newer world of analytics, he is a possible 'superstar' if he can put it all together, but it's going to be a tough pill to swallow if we pay him $20M and don't sign another big time FA because of it (I realize we can go over the cap to sign him, but I am talking max).

We won't forego a big-time free agent due to him.  It is admittedly possible that he could get in the way, but again, I don't think it will.  Partly this is due to the fact that I think it's more likely we trade for said star than sign him.  My instinct says that we will get Hayward, and Bradley will be in the package that acquires him.  And of course, if Olynyk is traded for the star, the entire discussion is moot.

But even if we fail to acquire said star via trade, it's more likely than not we'll have the cap room for both him and Olynyk (and keeping Bradley).  I expect the cap to be higher than $102 million, and while that will also increase the max salary, the cap increases at a greater rate, and we don't need much room to fit them both ($2-3 million).  There are other variables (where the Brooklyn pick ends up, for instance, and if we keep either Hunter or Young around).

There's also the undesirable but realistic possibility we do not successfully woo a star free agent.  Mentally that's included when I say that I find it unlikely Olynyk will get in the way.  Mostly I think we'll have the room, part of me thinks we'll make a trade, but the part I don't like to talk about is that we won't get one.  It won't be because of Olynyk that we don't get one.

His game is slow. Slow feet in space, slow release jump shot. Quality reserve? Yes. 17 20 million? Not a chance. Pack the bags at that price.

Three point shooting at 40%? Like they say, A clock is right twice a day

I believe you mean a broken clock is right twice a day, and do explain how that saying fits in this context? Are you saying Olynyk's 3-pt percentage this season was a fluke? The guy's a career 37% from 3-pt land. Sounds like he's got consistency there. Unless of course you meant something different. I'm sorry I'm just confused.

Quote
Kelly Olynyk understands the Boston Celtics’ salary-cap situation will loom over his restricted free agency this summer, but said he will not worry about how the team’s pursuit of top targets could impact his future. “It is what it is,” Olynyk said Thursday afternoon after appearing at a Shamrock Foundation carnival for students who achieved perfect attendance throughout the school year, boosted their grades considerably or won one of the Celtics’ annual writing or art contests. “I love that we have so much that can go on. (Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has) put our team in a position where that’s the case, and that’s why we were No. 1 in the East, that’s why we’re still trending upwards. And hopefully we can do something this summer that keeps us trending that way.” 3 days ago – via Booth Newspapers

Applause to KO for helping out with the Shamrock Foundation.

I'd like for him to stay at least one more year, but if that doesn't work out, happy trails.

In terms of giving back to the community, KO is the man.

He sounds excited about the teams future.

In terms of his future with the team, it will depend on who danny signs at FA.  If hayward, griffin are not signing. I can see KO signing a 3 year, 45 million dollar deal

Glad he's giving back, etc, but it's time to go. Maybe on another team he'll find some consistency, but right now he's one of the most frustrating players I've ever watched.
How he can play so well for a game or three, and then revert to an up-faking, non-rebounding waste of space is beyond me. The Celtics need someone who is consistent desperately.
Like the guy, wish him nothing but the best, but time to move on.
