On a podcast with Rapaport talking about Larry leaving his GM position, Simmons was asked why Bird left and said there is whispers that the owner is old and there are groups circling certain teams and the Pacers are one, and Bird is getting out early.

I hope we get George for pennies on the dollar then.

Often a team in transition won't make any big moves until the new ownership and front office have had time to assess things for a while. If anything I think this makes a George trade (e.g., at the draft) less likely.
