To the extent that winning their final two games will ensure the Celtics finishing 1 or 2 in the East, the team is master of its own destiny. Should the team fail to achieve that goal and finish 3 in the East the main difference might be that the chorus of experts and fans who are already looking beyond the playoffs when considering the Celtics future will grow even louder.
Tired of reading/hearing - ‘the Celtics need another all star’, ‘Danny mucked up by not adding in free agency’ or ‘the team relies on IT too much and he is too short’, I am ready to enjoy what this team can achieve in the playoffs, no matter what seed they end up and no matter what shortcomings so many seem intent on highlighting.
Lets be clear that this season should hold much higher expectations for the Cs in the playoffs than the previous two. I could understand people taking their eye of the playoffs to think about the draft, free agency and the future generally. It has and continues to promise so much. This season though this team, despite its faults, deserves our focus as they attempt a deep run. Some players may be having their final hit out as Celtics. Undoubtedly the team will look different in 17/18. As it is composed now though the team has its final hurdle approaching. The finals themselves could determine the future of players from James Young at the bottom of the roster up to IT and AB at the top.
Moreover, I know this team can now achieve in the end of season games. While DA may still be looking at what can be done after the season is finished, Stevens and the players have so much at stake and will be determined to build on what has been achieved previously.
Rant over. Go the Celtics!
