During my youth I'll admit I wasn't the greatest basketball player around. But, I could leap and played decent defense. In my mid-twenties I started developing back pain after playing basketball for any length of time. I attributed the pain to all the jumping I did through the years. Of course, I'm sure genetics and/or conditioning played a part.
That thought brings me to to thinking about how Avery Bradley may have ended up with his current Achilles injury. My feeling is that it may have something to do with the number of rebounds and the manner in which he has been rebounding lately.
As I watched him this year I often cringed because he often jumped up for rebounds when he really didn't need to. Many times, even he just stood there, the ball would often have fallen into his hands. I kept asking myself, why is he jumping? He's going to hurt himself. Sure enough this is what happened.
This is not the first time Avery has hurt himself from over-taxing his body. His tenacious defense has led to other injuries in the past.
My feeling is that when he returns he should temper his tenacity on the boards and jump only when he truly needs to.
Overall, I really like Bradley as a person and a player and hope we can sign him long term when his contract runs out.
