Tyler Zeller can't be traded until Jan 14th, I believe.   He's got an 8 mil expiring contract and he's a relatively low impact player for us.  So if we're looking to acquire someone (a Philly big for instance), using just draft assets, that Zeller 8 mil contract is probably pretty key to matching salaries.

Or as someone just pointed out to me... if we're trying to acquire someone like Jimmy Butler for Smart + Crowder + the Brooklyn 1st, that Zeller contract is an important one to include to match salaries.

Bottom line is, we might see things pick up a week from now.

I feel like Ainge will wait until DRAFT DAY to deal Zeller.

Amir and Jerebko are off the books I believe after the season ends, but Zeller's contract is 2 years and not guaranteed.

If the Celtics want to make a deal on draft day for a stud, they may need some salary filler, and Zeller provides that.

If we could send Smart, Crowder, Zeller, and the Brooklyn 2018 pick for Butler I would jump for joy.  That is a great trade.

Yeah - I can't see him staying.  At the very least I expect him to go out for Bogut.

I'd be for it if we could keep the 2017 Brooklyn pick, but I think unfortunately any deal for him includes the 2017 Brooklyn 1st.

This was Zach Lowe's recent take:

I don't think there's much real happening with Jimmy Butler. My theory -- and you could speak to this too, Kevin (Arnovitz) -- I think they want to see if they can get the Nets pick from Boston. I think this is all just like, "Let's throw it out and see if we get just Smart, Crowder, the Nets pick and if we can get that, then we're talking." If we can't get that, then we're not talking. I think Jimmy Butler is gettable. ... I think Jimmy Butler is gettable, and it just has to be an absolutely monstrous offer, and we're gonna have this happen once every three months, like "Nets pick? Nets pick? Nets pick?"

Crowder + the Nets 2017 pick I am fine moving for Butler. But I am not fine adding Smart to that deal. No way.

I don't really care about the addition of Smart.  I'd rather move Smart + the 2018 Brooklyn 1st than trade that 2017 Brooklyn 1st.  I'm almost at the point of accepting that Smart will never be anything more than a defensive role player and offensive liability.

What a brilliant reverse jinx calling Marcus an offensive liability just before an exceptional (possibly his best ever) offensive performance.   3 for 3 from the line to continue that surprising trend.

"I'm almost at the point of accepting that Smart will never be anything more than a defensive role player and offensive liability."

This guy is a good luck charm for the opposite to happen. He said the Brooklyn picks would be mediocre and then we ended up with Jaylen Brown and right now we are #1 for tankathon.

We need more negativity from this Celtics blogger.

I also have concerns about Smart's offensive game. But it is not impossible to fix + he has recently showed signs of  improvement (his FT% is p good lately and he had a good offensive game tonight against NOP). If he improves his 3pt shot and uses his strength in the paint (a floater would be handy too), he can become a reliable offensive option.

yeah you're welcome.  Reminded me of the fluke game he had against Westbrook a couple years ago.  Hopefully we don't have to wait years for the next big fluke game.

Big day for his trade value.  Loved it.   So far this year, Marcus is shooting lights out.   Maybe we should sell high before he goes back to bricking shots and shooting historically bad percentages.
