My friend who played for the Suns, Knicks and won a Ring with Wade and Shaq mentioned a while back that trades involving a star player with a year on their contract hardly ever gets done in the beginning of the year.... unless a couple things happen. He also said most of these guys are getting paid millions.... None are really causing enough friction with other players as much as with the front office. More likely with the front office most of the time....Players have a code of really keeping each other in check since they all hate to lose and want to work together to win and look good..... On court issues are far and few...its what happens off the court. (punching trainers and hooking up with moms)
A) Receiving team (Boston) or any team interested would have to have a handshake deal with he player. That the star player will/would resign with them. Very few teams want to give up any assets especially if they have cap space the same next year.....
B) The star player is upset with the current organization and will do more damage and disrupt the team chemistry. Think Dragic even though he was not a star.... So the sooner they move him the better. Those guys are the ones that can sink an organization by devaluing their trade value. NFL is big on that....(Desan Jackson) And if there is no other Alpha Leader or Veteran Coach to keep the team focused they would want to move them quickly to keep a professional locker room....
C) The team thats trading for the star is also sending expiring contracts of players they know they can't afford that offseason...... and maybe a couple later round or second round picks.
He said a deal like Westbrook, Griffin or Cuz could get done at the trade line if at all..... Those stars have not publicly asked for a trade..... He said our team could be playing at a elite level and is missing one big piece to put them in serious contention to win the EAST. Waiting until next year is the smartest... and fans do not have enough patience..... That Brooklyn pick is HUGE and we have cap space again next year.....
Another good point is if a player has not been ask to be traded, they also want to make sure player would be okay with the new team. In fear that future Free Agents would see that the organization wouldn't take all that into consideration.....
If a trade would happen we need a handshake deal on extension or (OKC, SAC or LA) would need to accept mostly expiring deals/late picks and/or be in a position to still compete after losing a star player. So I do not think its going to happen........
Either way its all like gambling.... Sometimes if you split a winning hand and double down you can win big..... Or p--- off the whole table..
I can see that the Clippers could still be competitive with out Blake.....So they might gamble. Then OKC next. Sac would still be Sac and we'd have the lowest odds getting Boggie.....
With the smaller deals LA did this offseason I think they keep Blake until the deadline. See how it plays out..... unless Boston offers a good first rounder with expiring deals...
