what a sad state of affairs over there in Brooklyn.
What a sad state of affairs period. I've got no idea who this is.

Speaks to your NBA knowledge.

Speaks to the fact that 24-year old undrafted nonames with less than a season's worth of semi-meaningful games are getting sizeable contracts. But then again, it's the Brooklyn Nets.

He's actually a pretty good athletic role player...You'll see for yourself this year. And please remember that this is the new salary for a role player in the NBA. It's cheaper then Turner's contract.
His contract is the equivalent of Avery Bradley's relative to the cap under which it was signed. The difference between a good managed team and a bad managed team is that one of them signs the Avery Bradleys and the Jae Croders of the world to such contracts, and the other... well, the Tyler Johnsons.

Um Bradley signed that contract before the cap rose. It can't be applied. It's comparing Apples to Oranges.
You're not very good at reading, are you?

Yeah so I guess every contract moving forward should be compared to Bradley's now eh. I guess Turners contract blows. You must really hate the Eric Gordan contract to. Not that I'm in love with those contracts. Is there any contract you like? Oh yeah, you won't like any contract because we did a great job signing Bradley and Crowder before the cap rose. It's dumb to compare.

It's perfectly fair to not like a lot of the contracts being handed out this summer. Middle tier free agents are getting max contracts. It'll be the same next year. However the year after when the cap increases go back to normal some of these contracts will start to sting. They are being signed above their value right now, rarely is that a good idea. The rising cap is just masking it.

You will see some good deals this summer. Lin was a good one for example. But they are few and far between. Notice though that the better managed teams are not handing out these overpay contracts. Boston, GS, Spurs, Toronto, all will give the max to the right players but will not overpay for the mediocre talent

I expect Miami to match the offer.

Johnson is a fantastic athlete.  Good outside shooter, hardnosed defender.  But that's an interesting contract for a player whom I'd argue isn't proven yet.   He was undrafted, ascended from the D-League to the Heat in 2015.  He didn't get much playing time in the playoffs with the Heat a few months ago.

Further, they're creating somewhat of a logjam with their roster.

PG: Lin/ LaVert
SG: Johnson/ Whitehead / Kilpatrick

Not too big of a concern I guess.  Rookies generally don't get much PT unless they're on a bad team like Brooklyn, but they'll get less developmental minutes with Johnson and Lin on board.

Miami can also still match, but I'm guessing they won't.  Apparently the final two years of the contract are $18 million and $19 million in guaranteed money.

$12.5 million a year is more than 1/8th of the new salary cap.  That's not a role player on a good team.  That's like 4th or 5th starter money.  Team's are throwing a lot of dollars at players who won't have much impact on wins and losses.

It's understandable why they're doing it.  Most top level free agents stay with their current teams.  The few that do move almost always choose new teams that are either good or look like they're going to be good.  But if you're in the bottom half of the league, you can't just sit around doing nothing.

The only reason he didn't get playing time in the postseason is because he returned from having been sidelined for months due to injury. He was clearly in Miami's top-8, averaging upwards of 20 mpg, before going down in the middle of the regular season.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
We all knew they had to sign some players as the only real salary bump on their team is Lopez. So far so good with Lin, Booker, and Johnson.

Looked like he had a few minutes against CHA in game 7, indicating he was available to play for the series against Toronto.  He was held out for the first 3 games against Toronto, DNP Coaches' decision, while players like Josh Richardson and Gerald Green got time.

He did get more time as the series progressed though, 13 min in game 5, 15 mins in game 6,  21 mins in game 7.  Inconsequential since they lost the series anyway.

Sure, he's not one of their stars, so it makes sense that he'd have to earn his minutes back since he returned from serious injury in the middle of a legitimate playoff run. Tyler did somewhat earn his former role back before Miami was eliminated, which, to me, speaks to Tyler's ability and commitment to his profession.

edit: Josh Richardson is also really good.

They really need to trade Lopez for picks. Just get it over with after he played a whole season for once.
