I'm bored at work and was thinking of Toronto's problems this summer. To re-sign Biyombo and DeRozan then they will likely have to move either Jonas Valanciunas or Ross. So I thought about how this could fit with our pursuit of DMC:
Boston receives: DMC
Boston trades: #3, Amir Johnson, KO, BOS 2018 1st, #16, #23, 2018 Nets pick
Toronto receives: Amir Johnson, KO, BOS 2018 1st, #16, #23
Toronto trades: Jonas Valanciunas, #9
Sacramento receives: Jonas Valanciunas, #9, #3, 2018 Nets pick
Sacramento trades: DMC
The trade would have to be agreed on draft night but finalised after the moratorium, much like the Nets trade. This would be because on draft night the salaries will not match due to JV's poison pill contract.
I look at it and I say Toronto doesn't get much but that is because they are trying to clear cap space. So if they can't have salary they need pick compensation. I wouldn't want to give them a Brooklyn pick as I think that is too much.
I think Sacramento gets a best of both worlds here. JV to fill in at centre straight away and two more picks at the top of the draft, plus a future Nets pick. I think it's a fair price for Cousins although I can understand them wanting more. I'd want to keep the 2017 pick.
As for us we achieve our aim of using mainly picks to get a star. We give up KO and Amir in the front court but replace them with DMC so we clearly improve. We give up 5 firsts, 3 this year and 2 in 2018. Only thing I might think about is keeping one in each year to give us some flexibility in future trades (Stepian rule) however I don't want to decrease the value of the picks in the trade. I'd be happy to give up some more pieces like the rookies or Young but not the significant ones like Smart, Bradley etc..
