Even if he wasn't a good fit for us, adding talent is more important than fit at the time. We can worry about fitting all the pieces together when we are contenders in the east.

However, I think his ability to guard 2-4 makes him an excellent fit for us. A small ball lineup with Smart, Butler, and Crowder switching everything at the 2,3 and 4 would fit Brad's preferred defensive system perfectly.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

We need scorers! But Im not sold on Butler being a big improvement for us. I would prefer us targeting difference makers in the front court than a wing where we are solid and improving. Butler's defense isn't better than Bradley's or Crowder's.

Signing a Ryan Anderson and a legitimate rim protector may yield better results than getting Butler but losing Crowder, Bradley and top-3 draft pick.

Signing Anderson and drafting a Hield, Deyonta or Poeltl preserves the team's core and add talents at positions of need.

Why would you think Butler isn't a big improvement, given that he:

* Has excellent size (at 6'7") for the SG spot
* Is a 20+ PPG scorer for two seasons straight now
* Is a two time all-defensive team selection
* Is an outstanding rebounder and passer for a guard (both around 5 a game)
* Is a great character guy, who works hard and plays with 100% effort every night

Regardless of whether you're talking about Bradley or Crowder, Butler is a massive, massive upgrade.

I'd still probably rather a great big man (Cousins, Dwight, etc) since I think we are more desperate for an upgrade there, but I'd be plenty happy for Butler.  Much as I love Crowder and Bradley, I feel we really do need an upgrade at one of those two positions if we want to be contenders.

TP. I agree with all of this. As much as we do ultimately need to upgrade one or both of those spots, I think an upgrade in the bigs department is more pressing right now, especially since there's only a couple of real free agent starter options, i.e. Horford, Whiteside, Small-Ball Durant, etc.

There's no question he's a good fit.  He's exactly the sort of do-it-all wing the Celts need.

The only guys who more exactly fit what the Celts are lacking are Paul George and Durant.

Another thing that shouldn't be overlooked from the ATL series is ITs ability to play off the ball. This is a wrinkle of the offense that I think should be further explored next season. At his diminutive size IT is a very tough guard moving off the ball.
IT reminded me of Iverson when Stevens used IT like that.

If we were to get KD....

I think people need to separate Butler from Durant.  It is two completely different questions.  Butler would be an improvement for the Celtics.  He would provide some back court length and scoring.  I don't even think that is a question.  The real question would be what do we need to give up to get him to which the answer is probably too much.

eg pick #3+Rozier+Bradley might not work for Butler but pick#3+Rozier+Bradley+Memphis pick (a VERY valuable commodity right now given Memphis organizational status) could really get us over the line.

I would do this trade for Butler.  I would even do the #2 pick (I am not convinced Ingram is a "can't miss" kind of prospect).  It seems fair to me but somehow I can't see Chicago doing it.  Why would they trade their best player, a proven NBA top line player, for such speculative assets?

If Butler then:

IT, Smart, Rozier
Smart, Bradley, Butler, Rozier
Butler, Crowder, Smart
X, KO, Crowder, Mickey
X, Amir, KO, X

Plenty of minutes for Bradley at SG, as Smart has duties at PG and SF too....
If Bradley or Smart has to go in the butler deal (a given i'd think, or in a deal for a high quality X, then so be it.

Without Bradley lineup:
IT, Smart, Rozier
Butler, Smart, Rozier
Crowder, Butler
X, KO, Crowder, Mickey
X, Amir, KO, X

If no top 2 pick, trade down for some acceptable big (Poetl or deyonta Davis?) and a future asset (unless multiple celtic guards are traded. In that case take Murray...second choice Hield, who even if he doesn't become a star, will be a great glue-guy type Celtic plus shooting).

if depleted of guards via trade, then late draft guards to take a flyer on:  1. Beasley  2. Cordinier  (stash) 3.  Malik Newman (excellent long view PG project and worthy second round flyer)

We need shooters and as a shooter jimmy butler isn't even better than Bradley. If we don't get shooting in the front court then butler's ability to slash is virtually nullified and  we would have to lose a big piece plus a draft pick for someone who won't make our team better... The discussion isn't if butler is better than who we already have, it's about him bringing a dimension that is missing from our team and in my opinion he doesn't. Good defensive guard with a mediocre shot and shoots below league average from 3... We already have that on our team for less than a max contract
