Originally projected at $90M now maybe $92M.

It's not just the size of the super-elite contracts because everything is proportional.  A lot of average players will be getting a lot of money.  $15M per season contracts will be doled out like a Pez dispenser.  Journeymen will get $10M contracts.

It jumps another $20 million or so next year too... and then it flattens out.  A smart GM can take advantage of that.

And, yet, rookie-scale contracts will not escalate. So, they'll be even team-friendlier.

Good thing we have one of those.

They'll go up under the new CBA, making this year's picks that much more valuable.

Right... so in theory, all of the above could happen.

Boston drafts Ben Simmons.
Boston trades a package of Bradley + Crowder + late 1sts for Jimmy Butler
Boston signs Durant
Boston signs Horford

... and even after adding those 4 guys (with Thomas as PG), still have cap space for a 5th max contract Summer 2017.

So many things could happen.  Not like any of it will, but it could.

I think it will be.  Even if none of those things happen, we have sooo many fallback options.  Say the pick ends up falling all the way to 6th and all the free agents snub us... We could, for instance, utilize our double-max cap space by absorbing the contracts of Carmelo Anthony and Robin Lopez for a package of picks.   Who knows... there's a ton of possibilities.

It will be. Not necessarily for us, but it will be very exciting in general.

The mid-level exceptions, room exception, bi-annual exception, and veteran's minimum exception do not escalate either.

Basically the rising cap is punitive to teams already over what will be the new, inflated cap.  Also punitive to vets likely to make the minimum.  I'm surprised these exceptions were negotiated into he new CBA at a predetermined rate instead of as a percentage of the cap.

I guess the league really does want to limit how much teams over the cap can do to add talent through free agency.  The mid-level exception doesn't carry anywhere near the buying power it used to.  The BAE and room exception are near worthless now.

Also hurt by this are rookies.  They'll be making a lower percentage of total league revenue than at any time in decades.

If they're predicting $92 million, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets even higher.  The NBA tends to be conservative with these projections.  For example, last April they projected $67.1 for this year and it wound up at $70 million.

$92 million means the C's would have room for two of Durant, Horford, and DeRozan without having to sweat it.  At $89 million, it would have been a razor thin margin depending on cap holds for draft picks.  If it gets up to $95 million, they could sign two and keep Sully, for those that want to keep him.
