Kevin Martin has agreed upon a contract buyout agreement with the Minnesota Timberwolves before the deadline to make him playoff-eligible.

Martin will be pursued by multiple teams with the San Antonio Spurs already considered a strong contender.

The Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets will also pursue Martin.

Martin and his agent had to negotiate a complicated settlement of the player option on Martin's contract that was scheduled to pay him $7.4 million next season.

Martin averaged 20 points per game as recently as last season.

I don't mind signing him for the vet min. Due to our log jam at the guard rotation. Unless we plan on using Turner more of a guard than SF coming off the bench for Jae

what is our priority right now? Is scoring still an issue for us? or should we be looking at defensive bigs?

I think Mickey is a better defensive big than anyone we could sign, unless it's Larry Sanders

We need three point shooting and scoring off the bench, Martin would be a great fit IMO.

I think the team has finally settled into its rotations, and we don't need someone else who would want to be a rotation player.  That's why David Lee is gone.  Barring severe injury to a backcourt player tonight, I would pass on Martin and leave the roster spot open for now.

I still don't see us signing one of these veteran buy out guys. I think Brad is going to run with the rotation we have and finish the season by giving the guys who have got us to where we are the chances and the experience. I don't see any of these buy out guys really moving the needle for us and will only take minutes away from the guys who need developing and experience. (IT, Crowder, Smart, AB these guys not the youth youth.)

I bet Martin signs with the Spurs.

Boston has to sign someone soon if they want that person playoff eligible.  If they don't I suspect they will take a flyer on someone like Tony Wroten to see if he might find a role on the squad next year.

Not necessarily. Can sign someone the last day of the season and he'd be playoff eligible. The criteria is that he still be a free agent (not under NBA contract) on March 1.

Players in China, like Michael Beasley, will all be playoff eligible if and when they sign with an NBA team.

It's my understanding that it does not matter when a player signs with a playoff team, the player just must have been bought out by 12am this morning. I could have misunderstood though.

Edit: I think the deadline is the end of March actually.

You were correct the first time.  That's why Martin's buyout came in at around 11:45 pm last night.  Any later and he wouldn't be post-season eligible.

Ya once you've  been waived or if you weren't on a contract to begin with, then you'll be playoff eligible if signed up until the playoffs actually start.

Example: Tracy McGrady signed with San Antonio on 4/16/2013 and was on their playoff roster that year.

Of course teams rarely wait, because they want as much time as possible to get a player acclimated to their system before the playoffs actually start, but it could happen.
