Couldn't help noticing how many people here seem to not want him. Have to admit, I don't really know much about him, beyond yesterday's game. Have to say, he looks like a beast. Great shot blocker, rebounder, and not too bad on offense.
Can someone enlighten me as to why he wouldn't be exactly what the Celtics need?
Thanks

He's a stats chaser. He gets a ton of blocks, but for a large part of his tenure the Heat have been better defensively with him on the bench. That's because he chases blocks rather than keeping good defensive position.

He's also extremely immature, and almost never passes the ball.  In terms of RPM - which allegedly measures a player's impact -- Whiteside ranks 25th among centers.

Roy, I definitely agree with your points. However, I do wonder if once he gets paid he'll embrace more of a team role. This of course is under the notion that he's trying to spike his numbers to ensure a massive payday.

I would sign him if I could - what you have seen last night wasnt a fluke or something - he basicly disrupts all opposing attemps to score close to the basket.

like most players he has some flaws but to me he is worth a try - if it doesnt work out I guess you will find more than enough takers

He is a pretty lazy defender outside of shot-blocking opportunities.

Sits too far back in the paint. Leaves too much space between him and his check. Slow to recover out to his man when his man gets the passed the ball outside of the paint. Inconsistent about contesting shots outside of 15 feet. Pick and roll defense is bad especially for a guy with his quickness and athleticism. Transition defense is good but should be better. Bad on switches because of his lazy defense outside of the paint. Bad man-to-man defender against bigs who can step out and knock down midrange shots. Bad man-to-man defender against bigs who can drive. A good post defender but can struggle against physically powerful players.

He has some weakness in his over all game, but his tools are solid, and he's still very young. IMO he would benefit from being on this Celtic team, with a bunch of hungry young players, with a good coach, and staff.

Miami just doesn't seem like a great situation for him. IMO he's worth real investigation.
