I'm no basketball trading rules expert but I don't think you can put protections on picks that are not yours.

I've seen a lot of trade proposals based around giving the nets pick top 3 protection or what have you and I don't think this is possible.

If I'm wrong please let me know. That is just the way I understand the rules.

Any gurus out there?

I think that even if there is a rule (which I have searched for and not found any evidence of aside from message board posts), it will still be possible.  We traded Doc for a pick which was illegal, but they ended up just scrapping the rule.

I can believe that you can't put protections on a draft pick that already has protections.  If you have the rights to Dallas' pick, top 7 protected, you can't trade those rights away because you don't actually have the rights until the draft lottery happens.  But if you own a pick outright, like we do with Brooklyn, I can't think of a reason you shouldn't be able to treat it like any other draft pick.

Larry Coon says you can't protect a traded pick you got from someone else.

I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

I believe you can just trade multiple picks to get around it. As in Nets or Celtics 2016 1st whichever is higher but top two protected.
If Celtics 2016 1st pick is dealt then 2017 Nets pick will also go to team x.
