EDIT: I did not know the pick had protections(Jeff Green trade). So I am interested to see what people think is the best case scenario.
1. Get pick as soon as possible
2. They end up conveying us the pick unprotected
3. We get the pick with slight restrictions

[Memphis pick is delivered two years after Grizzlies fulfill obligation to Denver. Pick is protected 1-11 in 2017; 1-13 in 2018; 1-9 in 2019; 1-7 in 2020, unprotected in 2021]‘

Ha oh wow, that is in play.  Best case though is Dallas finishing 8th or 9th, Griz finishing 13th and Minny finishing 14th.

Memphis pick is not unprotected

2018 first round draft pick from Memphis
Memphis' 1st round pick to Boston protected for selections 1-12 in 2018 (conveyable if Memphis conveys a 1st round pick to Denver in 2016), 1-8 in 2019 (conveyable if Memphis has conveyed a 1st round pick to Denver by 2017) and 1-6 in 2020 (conveyable if Memphis has conveyed a 1st round pick to Denver by 2018) and unprotected in 2021 [Boston-Memphis-New Orleans, 1/12/2015]

Wow I read that it was unprotected awhile ago. TP, wish I could give you more I really thought it was unprotected.

ESPN says the protections are different than what you stated:

[Memphis pick is delivered two years after Grizzlies fulfill obligation to Denver. Pick is protected 1-11 in 2017; 1-13 in 2018; 1-9 in 2019; 1-7 in 2020, unprotected in 2021]‘

Not sure where you see draft picks on ESPN but I think they are wrong.  The protection getting worse in 2018 doesn't look right.  I use the RealGM site.

Normally in these kinds of trades the receiving team does not get to choose when they get the pick.  They generally get it as soon as the parameter is fulfilled.  So if the pick falls outside the top 11 in 2017, we get it; can't refuse it.

nbadraft.net says this.....Celtics receive a 2018 Grizzlies first-round pick. (Top 12 protected in 2018,Top 8 in 2019, Top 6 in 2020, unprotected in 2021, to be conveyed 2 years after 1st rounder is conveyed to Denver.....which means assuming Denver gets the pick this year we have to wait two more years.  I think

Basically, we're not seeing that Grizz pick for a while.

which is fine.  much more likely to hit on it the longer you wait, especially for a franchise like Memphis which isn't exactly a free agent draw
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

The protection for this pick is tricky, but either way, it will eventually turn into a first rounder from the Griz. Memphis owes Denver their 2015 1st rounder, but that pick is protected from selections 1-5 and 15-30 in both 2015 and 2016, and then 1-5 in both 2017 and 2018. Once that pick is sent to Denver, because of the Stepien rule (which says that teams cannot trade first rounders in consecutive years), the Grizzlies will have to wait another year before they can finally send the pick to the Celtics. Since the pick will not be conveyed this year, the earliest the Celtics would see this pick would be in 2018. The protections will be as follows: 1-12 in 2018, 1-8 in 2019, 1-6 in 2020, and then ultimately unprotected in 2021.

CBlog's data is consistent with the RealGM data, but provides the protections on the MEM pick to DEN as well as on the MEM to BOS pick in one blurb instead of two. Currently ESPN is forecasting that MEM ends up in playoffs as a 6 or 7 seed this year with 41 wins. That means the pick to DEN is not conveyed this year. Given that the West is a lot weaker than past years, that seems reasonable despite MEM's negative average margin of victory. The 8th seed is currently projected to have 37 wins.

We would get our pick at the earliest in 2019 (4 drafts out), but there's a decent probability that it come to us later than that  all the way to 2021 based on the protections on both picks. Assuming one-and-done still holds true, then in 2021 we'd be looking at a player who's now in the 8th grade.

Agreed.

It's not like we need picks anytime soon.  If we get that pick in 2020, by that time we might actually need some youth.

Denver will probably get Memphis pick in 2017. So that means we get pick in 2019, 2020 or 2021.
By 2019. Memphis will be lottery team. They are not a FA destination and by then their team will be much worse considering they are pretty old and declining. Best case scenario...they are bottom 6 team in 2019 and 2020 and we get their unprotected pick in 2021. Considering we will have a bunch of draft picks in 2016, 2017 and 2018 draft this is ideal position
