Ever the diplomat, Danny Ainge. I just wonder how livid he is with a player who has fitness goals provided to him each season, and then comes back to camp being his usual sizeable self.

It is amazing to me how a guy who is paid millions for playing a sport can't seem to trim down to more effectively play the game. I was in the pro Sully camp up until it became evident that he's in the same shape as ever. I mean what's it going to take? This is your career...

I'm still rooting for him to put it all together but the Celtics have been more than fair to him in this process and something is just keeping him from being responsible. It's too bad because he has so much potential too...

Well, does he want to sabotage his trade value or confidence?   Nope, hence the diplomacy.

I would argue, that he never had much potential.   Potential is room for growth and is used too much in sports.  Jared came to us skilled already, in fact, he has such high skill level  that he was able to play from the get go.   Potential is future growth, he was never going to be a top flight athlete.  That being said, he could contribute immediately with his hands and rebounding with nifty using his body post moves.  He could play immediately.   His three point shot is an area where he had room for growth, but it never happened.  His strength and body had room to grow, but it never happened.  But I think his potential was finite and there was never a whole lot of room for growth.   This is what happens when you draft skilled guys who are not athletes.   An athlete has more room to get skilled but athletic ability is harder to improve than skills.

His choices.  An example, not to stay in Boston and train in Houston.   hire a nutrionist/chef.   Hire a personal trainer.   I would guess our trainers are better than an addiction coach.  I didn't believe the pics, because I saw vids of him moving slower than pondwater.

If he stays, his next contract needs a weight clause.

It is a sad situation, though, seeing a young person sabotage themselves and their career.

I think the main problem, and its what you mentioned, was him coming into the league and being able to contribute right away. He was NBA ready from day 1. So this has kind of solidified his belief that he's able to play at his weight. Problem is, he is not more valuable to this team then an in shape Zeller or Amir or even Olynyk. The even bigger problem is that he probably thinks he can out play them, even being out of shape.

If it came down to Perry Jones or Sullinger, I think you got to cut the guy who's not putting the work in.

Well, it seems like Ainge probably had all the information at his disposal to know when he drafted Sully that things would probably turn out this way.  There's a reason Sully fell to the bottom third of the 1st round.

Add on top of that the fact that Ainge had already drafted and dealt with a similar player in Glen Davis.  The team got good value from Davis on his rookie contract and then, when it came time to pay him, moved him for a more consistent, professional, and physically fit player, albeit one with less talent and skill.

At this point, I'm just hoping the Celts can get a similar return for Sullinger that they got for Davis.

Yes Danny is being diplomatic, he doesn't want to say what he's thinking. When they drafted him, DA and company had hopes he could be molded into a player they could use. Repair the back, get him in top condition and let him grow. It hasn't worked out that way.
Sully is what he is, he believes he's in good enough condition, and that's fine for him.

The Celtics play a fast pace of basketball, a lot of switching defensively for the bigs, Sully don't fit the mold.  Many teams don't play that style in the NBA. Find a new home for him on a team he fits with better, and hope you get some value. Maybe package him with another player, and a pick and get someone who better fits.

Well.....I don't see Dannynoffering him any contract over three years .  Sully may self destruct ,  if he get comfortable with a fat new contract .

There would have to be a lot of wording and clauses concerning his fitness.

I wouldn't want to be stuck with a 325 pd, broken bones tub of goo......with no energy or use.

Sully needs to get serious about his life .   Or it maybe a short one.

He may be too fat for many people's taste but he sure did dominate Okafor last night. And it wasn't particularly close.
