He's naming guys he saw play.  It shows a lack of historic perspective, but lots of other guys fall into that same category.

Yeah. Still, slotting in Kobe ahead of Bird just boggles my mind from anyone involved in basketball in any serious way.

I would agree with that, but I wouldn't be making allocations for Kobe over Jordan anyway, so it's a moot point (I'd probably put Dr. J over Bird, though, because I like to do these lists based on things like hair + facial hair, and Bird's mustache was the worst thing ever).
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

Simmons had a line about Bird being the greatest because it took such a great player to make a mustache out of just 12 hairs. I always liked that.
