Was sad that we didn't take him instead of Fab Melo when Melo proved to be a waste of time, but that was three years and a few surgeries ago.

I would wager he has more DNPs than games played this year.

  • Eagerly Awaiting the Next Fantasy Draft
I remember that he slipped in the draft because the reports were it was only a matter of time before his knees gave out. If he has gotten past that he could still be a player.

I see him getting rotation minutes from us this year. He is perfect for the system the C's were most successful with last year. He can run the floor, knock down 3's and guard multiple positions. He wouldn't be the first player to change teams and have a career year.

With the way Ainge compared the PJ3 trade to the Zeller trade I think Ainge sees it as a move where we got a player at a position of need for nothing but cap space. The question is how do they make room for him.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Melo is water under the bridge.  Now you got him for free and brings with him experience.  Experience going up against a better roster than Boston on a daily basis.  Is he good enough to crack this roster ?  It's going to be tough regardless, but possible.

He never got a shot with that roster until Durant went down.  In limited time and with a small shot, he performed extremely well.  So who knows at this point.  Smart move in taking a chance though.  Can't hurt.

That's not actually true, though. He had three great games -- per Kelly Dwyer, who nailed it,  "The three-game, 68-point run gave him nearly as many points as he'd scored in his entire rookie season (88) and nearly a third of his sophomore year total (216).

Then he got hurt, suffering a right knee contusion that kept him out for nearly a month. By the time he returned, so had Durant, again bumping him down a spot in the rotation. Before long, the brand of ineffective, barely-there play that had characterized much of his first two seasons returned, too, pushing Jones further down the bench, even after Durant's injury woes multiplied; even as Oklahoma City continued to try to make a playoff push, Jones rarely saw action more meaningful than choreographed pre-game high-fives."

He brings experience and knees that were only expected to last 3-4 years when he was drafted: https://twitter.com/SethDavisHoops/statuses/222504793967558656

And he's basically coming to us for free, given the cash considerations OKC included and the fact that we can waive him if he really looks like crap during training camp.

Those are not the signs of a player who can seriously contribute to an NBA team, particularly one that wants to win.

Wasn't given a chance to show signs to contribute though, right ?  Tough to show anything with that limited of time...Roster, Injuries, etc.

Really can only go off a small sample size.  Unless you're the Thunder, who got to see him go up against the roster in practice day after day.

That's true. The only people who really know how good he can be are Sam Presti & company, and it would be foolish to ignore the fact that they saved a ton of money by giving him away, so it's possible he could be a valuable contributor to our team this year.

I just see a few signs that this won't be the case. Of course, if the C's come out and make me look like an idiot by winning 50+ and watching PJIII play like he did in those three games all season long I'll happily take it.

LOL, me too.  I'll take it all day.  It's just a smart move to give him a camp shot based on what you know, his age, and the low risk....

*Went for 32, 20, and 16 when given an opportunity (small 3 game sample)
*One of the top players (Durant) who practices daily against him called him the greatest athlete in the league
*Great size for your SF spot
*Still only 23

What Durant says probably doesn't mean much to Ainge, as Ainge already scouted and knows how good of an athlete he is.  How it translates with the Celtics system will be the bigger story.  He's definitely got me curious.  Having said all that, I would bet against him making the team.  But like you, I hope he proves me wrong and goes out and surprises a ton of people.

okc once sent someone back that had a big toe problem
they were said to be quite finicky but they still drafted him-it would be nice if celts had their drs look at him and quickly
as a previous poster stated his last injury a knee contusion--imagine playing ball with durant and westbrook, that could in itself make someone insecure--and durant in may 2014 called him best athlete in nba--and next thought, this is the atlantic division

Given what happened with Jeff Green, I hope the Celtics doctors are all over any trades, especially ones coming from OKC.
