Very interesting.
The deal, which is expected to be announced later Wednesday, also includes operating control of Philips Arena, sources told Shelburne.
Guess we'll need to wait for more news on the deal to surface, but I immediately have to wonder whether there's any chance that new ownership might be interested in relocating to a more profitable market (read: Seattle).
Dumb question, but if they have operating control of the arena doesn't that make them less likely to move?
I was thinking the opposite: they control, so there's no lease to break (or penalties to do so) if they want to pull up tentstakes. But perhaps I'm misunderstanding what that means.
There is likely no lease to break, but they also miss out on all the revenue from the games, since there is no lease to pay either. They also probably get revenue from other events at the arena.
