I just don't see the point in bringing back Thornton. He really doesn't add anything the team needs. Thomas is our bench gunner, and a [dang] good one at that. No need for an inferior version of what we already have.

That aside, Smart, Bradley, and Thomas should be getting the majority of the guard minutes, now and going forward. Beyond that, I'd like to see James Young get more of a chance next season to work his way into a larger role in the rotation. His shooting and size would be a nice change of pace from the other three guards. To round out the guard rotation I think the team would be best served by bringing in a low-usage vet who has a bit more size than Thornton and is a more steady hand (i.e. someone who plays a more fundamentally sound game).

The minutes and role is not there in the backcourt for Thornton.  The Celtics need a SG with more size in that role.  Or just a pure outside shooter.

The Celtics already have that offensive spark off the bench who was an upgrade from Thornton.

Plus, the main focus this offseason should be C and SF in terms of filling roles.  (the real focus is still finding the star player)

If you read the post-deadline article by Chris Forsberg (I think -- small chance it was by Bulpett) you'd learn that the IT deal almost didn't happen, because Ainge insisted on the Suns taking back Thornton, which the Suns didn't want to do.  Given that his expiring contract nearly held up the deal, it seems rather improbable to me that he will ever wear Green again.

I think he is the type of player you look for if you are a serious playoff contender, and you need scoring punch off the bench as a backup SG which we aren't in that spot now.  Plus our roster is still kind of cluttered right now.  Maybe for example if James Young is part of a big trade, and we bring in big guns like Cousins or Love we could use someone like him.

He actually carried the Nets for part of a playoff series last year, and to be quite honest there were many times he played better than Bradley this season, and he wasn't as bad on D as I thought he would be.
