It makes some sense. Carmelo is almost 31, it's pointless to draft a bunch of young guys to play along him - he will be too long when they become ready. There are two ways: trade Melo and rebuild for good with young talents ou bring some 27-32 guys and try to win with Anthony.

The point is, who the Knicks want? They need to trade the pick for a star and then take Marc Gasol at the free agency.
It's nice seeing him get exposed as overrated after having argued with fellow fans for years that he was overrated.. but I don't hate him. I'm looking forward to seeing him [...] bounce around to a couple more teams... eventually come back to Boston[...] and helps us as a role player until he runs himself out of the league.

Unfortunately we have nobody they would want, but I suppose we could always do a three-team deal. I would imagine a team trading their star would want young assets in return, although the Knicks first is a really decent asset.

would love to get their pick but have to admit I'm not seeing anyone on the roster that they'd want.  we traded our 2 best vets (Rondo and Green) that would have gotten us that pick.  IT is our best 'vet' player and he's a poor starting point for a trade for a top pick

This seems like a 2007 Celtics situation.  You have Pierce and a top 5 pick, and pairing them together likely won't turn you into a contender.  So do you trade Pierce and go full rebuild?  Or do you trade the pick and try to win now?

Outside of trading the pick for Kobe (or trading Carmelo for the Lakers pick), I don't see much of a market that would be beneficial to both teams.  Not a lot of All-Star caliber veterans on losing teams that would be trying to rebuild right now or on teams that can't afford to pay them.  Besides Kobe and Carmelo, maybe Wade, Bosh, or Cousins?

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

It does make some sense but they are in a tough spot. If they want to contend next year they need a complete retooling of the roster. Other than Melo, the Knicks have nothing.

If I'm the Knicks, I'd almost rather trade Melo and really do the rebuild right.  Melo could still get you multiple 1st round picks and they would have a ton of cap space which they could use on younger developing players or to absorb guys that other teams don't want for additional picks (like what Philly has done a couple of times this year).   So you take your pick this year, which is no worse than 4th right now and then you trade Melo for another lottery pick this year as well as future 1sts and young players and start the build that way.  Looking at the projected lottery, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Sacramento, and Houston (they have the Pelicans pick) all would seemingly make a good location for Anthony (in that acquiring him puts them into real contention or in the case of Houston maybe the favorites) and/or who would possibly have the pieces necessary to acquire him.  I actually think Detroit makes a lot of sense, 2015 1st (trade after draft to count salary), Jennings, Caldwell-Pope, 2017 1st for Anthony.  That would be pretty nice value for Anthony and a pretty good start on the rebuild for the Knicks.  The Pistons then re-sign Reggie Jackson and Greg Monroe who when added to Drummond, Meeks, and Anthony would be a real threat to the Cavs, Bulls, etc. in the East.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I'd expect them to try to move the pick. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lakers and Kings are openly shopping theirs as well.

This is the main reason I'm so skeptical about our chances of rebuilding by acquiring a star this year via trade or free agency. There will probably be a few teams with asset packages that totally trump ours.

And with LA and NYK you're also looking at them being the most attractive FA markets.

For example, how can we compete for Cousins if the Knicks or Lakers offer a top 3 pick for him?

Why would a top FA sign with us if he can sign with NYK when they have Carmelo and possibly another star they've just traded for?

I think we're looking at another year of Danny keeping our picks and making smaller deals around the edges.

Since every team needs a top player, and they're the hardest to get and keep, trading Melo would be the last option.

But boy, could we put a package together or what!

I doubt they'd take what we have, though. Turner, Sully, KO, picks, filler?
