I would rather keep the money and give Green an offer that Golden State can't match because of Lee.

I'd operate under the assumption that if Golden State is willing to trade a first to dump Lee so that they don't pay too much luxury tax then they will probably be able to find a buyer.

I wouldn't.  They're currently slated to pick 30th this year, which isn't hugely valuable.  Because their 2017 pick is already promised, they can't trade a pick until 2019. The list of teams who can offer Golden State useful parts this year on expiring deals that match with Lee's salary isnt extraordinarily long, and even less so when considering which of those teams would be willing to take on salary next year and have use for one year of David Lee.  I'm struggling to find any, quite honestly.

I would expect GS to try to move Lee in July, not at the trade deadline.  A team like the Knicks might whiff on their top free agent targets and decide to punt and preserve cap space for 2016.  Given all the future picks the Knicks have traded away, they might be happy to take back Lee for a year for the draft rights to whoever the Warriors select, especially if they can get Festus Ezili as part of the deal.

I agree with that part, again meaning there aren't too many teams willing to help out Golden State.  Heck, if we offer Green and they match, then I'd take Lee for a future first.  But it's not something to do now.

i don't know that GS can find a trading partner during the season, and i don't know that they'd want to sabotage this title run just yet. more likely GS could trade lee to a team with cap space this offseason, kind of like what they did with biedrins and utah a couple years ago. i could see philly doing that move just to get to their minimum salary number, and GS would send them their 2015 first-rounder for the trouble.

HOWEVER
if the c's were to make a move for lee i'd suggest this:
-warriors get thornton, bass
-kings get lee
-c's get stauskas, jason thompson (toxic deal, 3years, $6M per year), and derrick willliams' expiring

c's would essentially be getting stauskas for taking on thompson's crappy contract. considering how poorly stauskas has played, i don't know that it's worth it.
