I'm not really sure what the Nets think they're doing. Clearly the beginning of a firesale...
Except the only first rounder they have until 2019 will be the lesser of ours and theirs in 2017.
They'll have to sign at least one star and numerous high-level supporting cast players to jump out of the NBA cellar until they get a non-lotto pick in 2019 (I don't expect both their pick and ours to be in the lotto in 2017).
What's the M.O. here? Usually it's: If you're going to stink, at least get a good draft pick.
For them it seems like the M.O. until 2019 will be: If you're going to stink, at least maintain the lowest possible payroll.
Should be a bleak franchise for at least five years.
edit: the logic might be this: if you maintain cap space, you can take on contracts from other teams at the price of first or second-round draft picks, much like the Sixers have. Still, not exactly a promising future if you don't own your draft picks while playing that poorly.
