It's a proven fact that all championship have either a DPOY or/and MVP type player. Since there are no MVP type players that will be available next summer, let's target guys that won or have potential to win that certain award.

All current players that have won the award have made it deep in the playoffs.

Dwight Howard (2009-2011) - Made it to NBA finals once
Tyson Chandler (2012) - Won a championship as the defensive anchor
Marc Gasol (2013) - Made it to Western Finals once
Joakim Noah (2014) - Made it to East Finals once

Potential DPOY candidates:

Andre Iguodala - The current defensive anchor of the Warrior. The defense sags off without him
Deandre Jordan - Best defensive player on a team with a good defensive system.
Roy Hibbert - His size alone would give opponents hard time going to the hoop.
Paul George - He's a good one too but there are injury concerns right now.
Taj Gibson - Gives Noah a run for his money on the team.
Serge Ibaka - The anchor of the Thunder's defense. Nuff said.
Tony Allen - Change the defensive culture of the Grizzlies.

Unproven potentials:

Kenneth Farried - His defense in the FIBA world cup was great.
Larry Sanders - One of the top shot blockers in the league
Anthony Davis - Shouldn't be in this list but he's on the way to be a legit DPOY candidate.
Josh Smith - Could have been much better if it wasn't for his BBIQ.
Andre Drummond - Have the tools to become a great defensive center.

I'm not ready to name Smart a DPOY candidate yet but he certainly have a chance at all defensive team. Same with Wiggins and Aaron Gordon.

Here are their defensive ratings last season:

Who's available next summer?:

Tyson Chandler (UFA)
Marc Gasol (UFA)
Kenneth Farried (RFA)
Roy Hibbert (UFA) - Player option

There is also:

Tim Duncan (UFA) and our old friend, KG (UFA). But I think these two are in the verge of retirement.  Tim Duncan would rather stay with his team and KG is no longer the defensive player he was.

Other means to get these players:

- Sign an undrafted free agent and develop them. (see Bruce Bowen and Ben Wallace. Very unlikely though)
- Draft a defensive specialist in the upcoming draft.
- Trade for available ones.

I see alot of trade suggestion here in the forum but I don't see any of them (except sanders) to have a huge defensive impact.
