Boston out: bass and maybe some 2nd round picks
Boston in: Thomas Robinson and Allen Crabbe

I really thought something like this was going to happen last season, when Portland was hoping to gear up for a long playoff run.

With Bass now in the final year of his contract, it should bring more suitors on the trade market. I do think Portland is a team that could use a steady vet PF off the bench. The Kaman acquisition helps lock down the C rotation, but PF still seems a bit dodgy.

Edit: I think a straight swap of Bass for TRob (and Claver as expiring filler) seems equitable.

I think Bass can get us better, I heard that Robinson may be on waivers someday and not in their plans a 2nd rounder might get him and your sending Bass?

Got a link for that? Can't see the Blazers flat out waiving the guy.

I'm genuinely curious why you think this is a good trade.  not picking on you, just looking for a reason why the C's would have any reason to do this.

TRob has been in the league only a few years and has bounced around several times because he's not particularly good.  The potential people thought he had has never materialized.  He'll be lucky to hang on in the league next year in a journeyman role.

Bass is a productive player when in the right system.  can defend decently.  can hit regularly from 17 feet and in.  now expanding his range to the 3.  definitely a quality backup PF that can spot start as needed on a very good team.  also an expiring deal this year.

I'm all for trading Bass for a better player or another asset (prospect/pick) but he's a much better player than TRob is now or is expected to ever be.  This trade doesn't accomplish that.  If it was for TRob and a first, that would be worth considering or better yet, someone other than TRob who isn't another PF to clog up that position on the C's (which TRob would do--not that TRob would get any PT behind Sully and KO)

Is that true?

Drafted by Sacramento, who has had a very spotty record of developing draftees. Traded to Houston mid-season as a rookie; according to Kelly Dwyer, it was a financial move by cheapskate ownership.

Houston dumped his salary in an attempt to free up as much cap space as possible to make a run at a max-level free agent. Another move dictated by dollars.

Robinson hasn't set the world on fire, admittedly. But I think he's far from a lost cause. If Ainge could squeeze a 1st as well out of Portland, well, that'd be a coup. I'd agree that the Celtics probably don't need to send out 2nd rounders to make this palatable for Portland.

Sac made sure to hold on to Cousins.  if TRob had the talent, they'd have held on to him to put next to him.

Houston - if TRob had the talent, they would have kept him for his cheap deal instead of thinking they needed Bosh.

In any case, I'm in agreement that to make this palatable to the C's, a first needs to come back this way and nothing but Bass going out.  I'm not moving an actual asset in Bass for so little in return.

Given that no one is offering an asset for Bass I don't see him as having anymore value than Thomas Robinson. He's better on the court now, but no one wants to pay him given his production either.

No reason to move him just to shuffle the deck chairs with another expiring deal though.

I say why not? Robinson is very young and he is an expiring contract so this would be a tryout year for him. I would substitute Will Barton for Allen Crabbe since Crabbe seems to have 2 years of guaranteed money and Barton is basically an expiring contract. I'm also not giving them any draft choices. We might ask them for a 2nd but that wouldn't be a deal breaker if they say no.

Agreed.
