I thought you meant now.  What you are really asking, it seems, is if you could go back in time would you have taken Dirk over Paul Pierce.

Yes, I'm biased, but I'll take the Truth every time.  Wouldn't trade his run as a Celtic for anything. 

As far as Rondo today vs. Dirk today, I'll take Rajon.

For me Dirk is the second best player of the last 15 years.
The Mavs is a perennial good team, 50+ win in the tough west. Just Duncan can rival him. Not even Kobe.
He's a true franchise player.
Rondo is not.

If you are asking who would you rather have for this season and this season only, Nowitzki is a reasonable answer, and probably the correct one.  If you are asking who would you rather build around, one way to think about that would be who you would rather start with as a player on your roster for the next five years, and Rondo's age makes him the easy answer.
